Unseen

אם תלמיד קורא "This changed the way the school worked" ולא יודע למה This מתייחס, הוא עלול להבין כל מילה ועדיין לפספס את משמעות המשפט.

Why, How, What, Where, Which. אחר כך סמנו מילות תוכן – למשל students, free bicycles, first year.

Module D

Keyword trap
Answering from knowledge
Too much information מוסיפים מידע שלא התבקש. ONE / TWO / Give a reason לפני המענה.
Wrong reference לא ברור למה it או they מתייחסים.
Translation dependence
Incomplete sentence
לחפש because, so, therefore, as a result ורעיונות מקבילים.
Main idea/detail confusion

אבל ייתכן שהטקסט אומר שהאירוע used to be expensive but is now free.

למשל: What caused the change?

במקום לזכור רק "available = זמין", כדאי ללמוד צירופים: available online, available to students, tickets are available, make something available.

Unseen

Unseen 1: The Phone-Free Lunch

Text:

Last year, Green Hill High School noticed a strange problem. Although students sat together during lunch, many of them hardly spoke to one another. They ate while looking at their phones, watched short videos and sometimes sent messages to classmates who were sitting at the same table.

The school did not want to ban phones for the entire day. Teachers knew that many students used them to check the school timetable, contact their parents or photograph homework instructions. Instead, the school decided to test a smaller change. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students were asked to leave their phones in their bags during the thirty-minute lunch break.

At first, the idea was unpopular. Some students said lunch would be boring. Others worried that they might miss an important message. The school therefore placed a telephone in the main office that parents could call in an emergency.

After six weeks, teachers asked students about the experiment. Surprisingly, almost two-thirds wanted the phone-free lunches to continue. Students said they had started playing card games, talking to people outside their usual friendship groups and spending more time outdoors. One student even said that lunch seemed longer because she was no longer moving quickly from one online video to another.

The school has not decided whether to add more phone-free days. Instead, teachers plan to repeat the survey at the end of the year. They want to know whether the positive reaction continues after the idea is no longer new.

Answer: A school tested phone-free lunches and received a mostly positive response from students.
  15. Which title could also fit the text?
Answer: "What Happened When Students Put Their Phones Away?"

Unseen 2: A Library Where You Borrow More Than Books

Text:

When people hear the word "library," they usually think of shelves filled with books. In the town of Westford, however, residents can borrow many other things. Its new Library of Things offers tools, camping equipment, board games, kitchen machines and even a small projector.

The project began after town workers noticed that many useful objects were being thrown away. Some had only been used once or twice. At the same time, families complained that they sometimes had to buy expensive equipment for a single job, such as a drill needed to put up a shelf.

The town collected donated objects and created an online catalog. Members can reserve an item, collect it from the library and usually keep it for seven days. Before certain tools are borrowed, a staff member gives a short safety demonstration.

The service has become particularly popular with young adults who live in small apartments. They say they do not have enough space to store equipment that they rarely use. Parents also borrow games and camping items before deciding whether they want to buy their own.

Running the project is not completely simple. Every returned item must be checked, and damaged equipment can be expensive to repair. Still, the library reports that most objects return in good condition. It is now asking local residents which new items should be added next year.

  1. How is the Westford library different from a traditional library?
Answer: People can borrow useful objects and equipment, not only books.
  2. Give TWO examples of things people can borrow.
    Answer: Tools and camping equipment.
  3. What problem did town workers notice?
Answer: Useful objects were being thrown away after very little use.
  4. Why did some families dislike buying equipment?
Answer: Because they sometimes needed expensive equipment for only one job.
  5. Where can members choose an item?
    Answer: In the online catalog.
  6. How long can members usually keep an item?
    Answer: Seven days.
  7. What happens before some tools are borrowed?
Answer: A staff member gives a safety demonstration.
  8. Why is the service popular with people in small apartments?
Answer: Because they do not have enough space to store rarely used equipment.
  9. Why do some parents borrow games before buying them?
Answer: To decide whether they want to own them.
פירוש: borrowing acts as a trial.
  10. True or False: The project is easy to manage because items do not need to be inspected.
    Answer: False.
  11. What can make the project expensive?
    Answer: Repairing damaged equipment.

  15. What is one possible benefit of a Library of Things?
Answer: People can use equipment without having to buy and store it themselves.

Unseen 3: Vegetables Above the City

For years, the roof of the Carlton Shopping Center was an empty gray space used only by maintenance workers. Today it looks completely different. Rows of tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and strawberries grow there in hundreds of containers.

The rooftop garden was created by a local environmental group together with the shopping center. Their first aim was to show city residents that food could be grown even where there was little open land. However, the project soon developed a second purpose. Nearby restaurants became interested in buying some of the vegetables.

Growing plants on a roof requires careful planning. Because carrying large amounts of heavy soil onto the building would create problems, the gardeners use lightweight growing materials. They also collect rainwater in special containers and use it to water the plants. During very hot weeks, volunteers often arrive early in the morning so that the plants can be watered before the temperature rises.

The garden also offers free visits for local school classes. Instead of only reading about food production, students can see how plants develop and learn why insects such as bees are important to many crops.

The organizers do not claim rooftop gardens can provide all the food a city needs. Their goal is more practical: to use spaces that would otherwise remain empty, provide some locally grown food and help people understand how food is produced.

Unseen 4: The Repair Café

Text:

On the first Saturday of every month, people arrive at a community center in Lakeside carrying broken lamps, chairs, bicycles and small electrical devices. They are not bringing these objects to throw them away. They are coming to the town's Repair Café.

The café was started by a group of retired workers who were surprised by how quickly people replaced damaged household products. Some items had only a small problem, but their owners did not know how to fix them. The volunteers believed that sharing repair skills could save money and reduce waste.

Visitors do not simply leave an object and return later. They are encouraged to sit with the volunteer and watch the repair. Whenever possible, they help with simple parts of the job. The organizers say this is essential because the project is intended to teach skills, not become a free professional repair business.

Not every object can be saved. Sometimes replacement parts are unavailable, and volunteers refuse to repair products that could be dangerous. Still, about sixty percent of the items brought to the café last year were successfully repaired.

Recently, several teenagers have begun volunteering too. They often help older visitors with software problems, while experienced volunteers teach them how to use basic tools. Organizers say this exchange of knowledge has become one of the most valuable parts of the project.

Unseen 5: Starting School Later

Text:

For many years, lessons at North Valley Secondary School began at 7:45 in the morning. Students who lived far from the school sometimes had to leave home before 7:00. Teachers often noticed that the first lesson of the day was unusually quiet and that some students struggled to concentrate.

Last September, the school tried a different timetable. Classes began at 8:30, while the school building still opened at the usual time for families who needed to arrive early. Sports practices and some clubs were moved to later in the afternoon.

The change created several difficulties. Some parents had organized their work schedules around the old timetable, and a few students said they disliked getting home later. The school also had to negotiate new bus times with the local transport company.

However, a survey conducted after four months found that most students preferred the new schedule. Teachers reported fewer late arrivals during the first lesson, and many students said they had more time to eat breakfast before school. Interestingly, attendance at morning study sessions also increased because those sessions now started at a more convenient time.

The school has decided to keep the timetable for another year before making it permanent. Administrators say one survey is not enough. They want to compare attendance, student opinions and academic results over a longer period.

Unseen 6: The Community Fridge

Text:

Outside a community center in Brook Street stands a large refrigerator with a bright sign: "Take what you need. Leave what you can." It is one of several community fridges that have appeared in the city during the last three years.

The idea is simple. Local shops, restaurants and residents can place suitable food in the fridge instead of throwing it away. Anyone who needs the food may take it without filling out a form or explaining their situation.

Volunteers inspect the fridge twice a day. They check dates, clean the shelves and remove anything that should not be there. Certain products, including food that has already been partly eaten, are never accepted. Clear instructions are displayed beside the refrigerator.

At first, organizers expected the main benefit to be reducing food waste. That remains important, but they discovered another effect. People began meeting one another while bringing or collecting food. A nearby bakery started leaving bread every evening, and local residents created an online group to announce when fresh fruit or vegetables had arrived.

The organizers are careful not to describe the fridge as a complete answer to food insecurity. It cannot guarantee that the right food will always be available. However, they believe it is a useful community resource that prevents some good food from being wasted while making it available to people who can use it.

Unseen 7: Maps That Show More Than Streets

Text:

Most digital maps can tell users where a café is located or how long it takes to walk to a train station. A group of university students in Brighton wanted their map to answer a different question: how easy is it for everyone to reach these places?

The students created an accessibility map showing information that standard maps sometimes leave out. Users can see whether a building has steps at its entrance, whether there is a ramp, how wide a doorway is and whether an accessible toilet is available.

Collecting the information takes time. Volunteers visit streets with a simple measuring tool and enter details into an app. Local businesses can also send information, but volunteers check it before it appears publicly. The team says this is important because a small error, such as describing one step as a flat entrance, could cause a serious problem for a user.

At first, the map covered only the city center. After disability organizations shared it online, hundreds of residents began requesting information about other neighborhoods. The team has now trained more volunteers and hopes to cover the entire city.

The students say the project has changed the way they themselves look at public spaces. Before starting the map, many had never noticed narrow entrances or missing ramps. Now they understand that information which seems unimportant to one person may determine whether another person can enter a building at all.

Unseen 8: Refill Instead of Throwing Away

Text:

Students at River Park School used to buy hundreds of plastic water bottles every week. Although recycling bins were available, members of the environmental club noticed that many bottles still ended up in ordinary rubbish bins.

The club suggested installing water refill stations around the school. The machines provide cold drinking water and are designed to fill reusable bottles quickly. To encourage students to try them, the school gave every new student a simple reusable bottle at the beginning of the year.

The first month revealed an unexpected problem. The station near the sports hall was used constantly, while another station on the second floor was rarely used. Instead of assuming students did not like the idea, club members asked them why. They discovered that most students simply passed the sports hall several times a day but had little reason to visit the second-floor corridor.

The school moved the unpopular machine close to the cafeteria. Its use increased immediately. The environmental club says the experience taught them an important lesson: changing people's habits is not only about convincing them that an idea is good. The convenient choice must also be easy to make.

The school estimates that far fewer single-use bottles are now being purchased on campus. Club members are currently collecting more detailed information so they can measure the change more accurately.

Unseen 9: A Museum Night Designed by Teenagers

Text:

The City History Museum had a problem. Families with young children visited regularly, and adults attended lectures and exhibitions, but very few teenagers came unless they were part of a school trip.

Instead of guessing what teenagers wanted, the museum invited twelve students aged fifteen to seventeen to join a youth planning group. They met once a month with museum staff and were asked to design an evening event for people their age.

The students made several changes to the museum's usual approach. They suggested keeping the building open until 10 p.m., adding live music and creating short activities instead of long guided tours. They also argued that tickets should be inexpensive and that teenagers should be allowed to explore some exhibitions independently.

The first Teen Museum Night attracted nearly four hundred visitors, much more than the museum expected. A questionnaire showed that the music was popular, but the most highly rated activity was a twenty-minute workshop in which visitors learned how old photographs are restored.

Museum staff were particularly interested in one result: more than half the visitors said they would return for an ordinary exhibition, not only another special event. The museum therefore plans to hold two Teen Museum Nights next year. More importantly, it has asked the youth planning group to continue advising staff about other exhibitions.

Unseen 10: Saving Local Stories

Text:

When sixteen-year-old Maya Cohen interviewed her grandfather for a school history project, she expected the conversation to last about twenty minutes. Instead, they spoke for almost two hours. He told her about shops that had disappeared, games children used to play in the street and the first television his family owned.

Maya's teacher realized that many students had similar family stories that were never written down. She suggested creating a digital collection of local memories. Students could interview older relatives or neighbors, record the conversations and choose short sections to publish on a school website.

Before conducting interviews, students learned how to prepare open questions. Instead of asking, "Did you enjoy school?" they were encouraged to ask, "What do you remember most clearly about school?" They also learned that interviewees must agree before any recording is shared publicly.

The project soon expanded beyond the school. A local retirement home invited students to interview residents who did not have young relatives nearby. The town library offered to keep copies of the recordings so future researchers could use them.

Students say the project has improved more than their history knowledge. They have learned to listen carefully, ask follow-up questions and speak with people from a different generation. Maya says she now understands why recording ordinary memories matters: details that seem normal today may become valuable pieces of history in the future.

Module D.

Unseen?

Main Idea?

Module D 16484 – Summer 2026

2. British Council – Skimming and Scanning:
Skimming and Scanning Reading Tips

3. Cambridge English –
Cambridge English Skills Test – General Reading

4. Education Endowment Foundation – One to One Tuition:
One to One Tuition – Teaching and Learning Toolkit
