בקריאה אקדמית כל מילה עשויה לשנות את משמעות המשפט: may אינו will, המילה some אינה all, ו־associated with אינו בהכרח caused by.

1: Urban Heat Islands

Cities are often warmer than surrounding rural areas, a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect. Roads, roofs, and concrete surfaces absorb solar energy during the day and release it slowly after sunset. The effect is intensified when vegetation is removed, because fewer plants are available to cool the air through shade and evaporation. Researchers have therefore encouraged cities to plant trees and install reflective or vegetated roofs. Yet these interventions do not benefit every neighborhood equally. Wealthier districts often have more space, stronger local organizations, and greater influence over public investment. As a result, citywide increases in tree cover may leave the hottest and least affluent neighborhoods with little improvement. Some planners now argue that heat policy should be evaluated not only by the total number of trees planted, but also by where they are planted and who receives the greatest reduction in risk.

2: Sleep and Memory

Sleep is frequently described as a period of inactivity, but research on memory suggests otherwise. During sleep, the brain appears to reorganize recently acquired information, strengthening some neural patterns while allowing less relevant details to fade. This process, often called memory consolidation, does not mean that every hour of sleep produces an equal benefit. Timing, sleep quality, and the type of material learned may all influence the outcome. A student who studies unfamiliar concepts and then sleeps normally may retain them better than a student who remains awake all night. However, sleep cannot compensate for ineffective study. If information was never understood or meaningfully encoded, additional sleep is unlikely to transform it into durable knowledge. Researchers therefore view sleep as one component of learning rather than a substitute for attention, practice, and comprehension.

3: Pollinator Diversity

Agricultural discussions often focus on honeybees, yet crops are visited by a wide range of pollinating insects. Wild bees, flies, beetles, butterflies, and even some wasps can contribute to the transfer of pollen. Their importance becomes especially clear when environmental conditions change. A species that is active on warm, sunny days may be ineffective during cooler or wetter periods, while another species may continue working. Diversity therefore provides a form of ecological insurance: if one pollinator declines or becomes inactive, others may partly maintain the service. This does not make managed honeybees unimportant. Rather, it suggests that relying on a single species can create vulnerability. Protecting nesting sites, reducing unnecessary pesticide use, and maintaining varied flowering plants may support a broader community of pollinators and make food production more resilient.

4: Digital Archives

Digitizing historical documents can greatly expand public access. A manuscript once available only to visitors at a distant archive may become searchable from anywhere. However, digital access is not the same as permanent preservation. File formats become obsolete, storage devices fail, websites lose funding, and descriptive information may be incomplete. In addition, scanning creates a representation of an object, not a perfect replacement for it. Features such as paper texture, binding, ink depth, and marginal notes may be difficult to reproduce on a screen. Archivists therefore treat digitization as one layer of preservation rather than a reason to discard originals. Successful digital archives require repeated migration to newer systems, accurate metadata, secure backups, and long-term institutional responsibility.

  1. The passage mainly discusses:
    1. why original documents should never be viewed.
    2. both the benefits and limitations of digitization.
    3. how to write marginal notes.
    4. why websites are always permanent.
  2. One advantage of digitization is that it:
    1. makes distant materials more accessible.
    2. prevents all storage failures.
    3. reproduces every physical feature perfectly.
    4. eliminates the need for metadata.
  3. The word “obsolete” is closest in meaning to:
    1. no longer in common use.
    2. extremely expensive.
    3. physically attractive.
    4. carefully organized.
  4. Why may a scan be an incomplete substitute?
    1. It may fail to capture material qualities of the original.
    2. It can be viewed only inside the archive.
    3. It always removes the written text.
    4. It cannot include any descriptive data.
  5. “One layer of preservation” implies that digitization:
    1. should be part of a broader preservation strategy.
    2. is sufficient by itself.
    3. makes original objects worthless.
    4. requires no future maintenance.
  6. Which is NOT listed as necessary for successful digital archives?
    1. Secure backups
    2. Accurate metadata
    3. Long-term responsibility
    4. Discarding all originals
  7. What can be inferred about digital preservation?

    2. It becomes unnecessary after scanning.
    3. It depends only on paper quality.
    4. It guarantees continuous funding.
  8. The author’s attitude toward digitization is:

5: Default Options

People often assume that a default option is neutral because individuals remain free to choose something else. Behavioral research, however, shows that defaults can strongly influence decisions. Employees are more likely to join a retirement plan when enrollment is automatic and leaving the plan requires action than when joining requires the same action. This pattern may reflect inertia, limited attention, trust in the organization, or the belief that the default represents a recommendation. Defaults can therefore improve participation in beneficial programs, but they also raise ethical questions. A choice designer may guide people toward an outcome without banning alternatives, yet the guidance can be difficult to notice. Ethical use of defaults requires transparency, easy withdrawal, and evidence that the selected option serves the interests of the people affected.

  1. What is the main point of the passage?
    1. Defaults have no effect when alternatives exist.
    2. Defaults influence behavior and should be designed responsibly.
    3. Retirement plans should be prohibited.
    4. People always reject organizational recommendations.
  2. Automatic enrollment increases participation partly because:
    1. people may remain with the existing option.
    2. withdrawal is legally impossible.
    3. employees receive no information.
    4. all workers prefer identical plans.
  3. The word “inertia” most nearly means:

    2. careful financial analysis.
    3. active opposition.
    4. public transparency.
  4. Why might people interpret a default as a recommendation?
    1. They may assume the organization selected it for a reason.
    2. They are forbidden to read alternatives.
    3. Defaults contain no information.
    4. Retirement plans are always mandatory.
  5. What ethical concern is raised?
    1. Guidance may influence people without being obvious.
    2. People have too much attention.

6: Linguistic Relativity

The idea that language influences thought has generated intense debate. Strong versions of the claim suggest that people cannot think concepts for which their language lacks words. Most contemporary researchers reject this absolute position. Nevertheless, language may guide attention and make certain distinctions easier to notice or remember. Speakers of a language that regularly marks direction using north, south, east, and west, for example, may develop unusually precise habits of spatial orientation. This does not prove that speakers of other languages are incapable of understanding direction. It suggests instead that repeated linguistic practice can make some patterns of attention more automatic. Language and thought are therefore better understood as interacting systems than as a prison in which vocabulary fixes the limits of cognition.

  1. The passage primarily argues that:
    1. language completely determines what people can think.

7: Remote Work and Productivity

Debates about remote work often treat productivity as a single measurable quantity, yet different jobs produce different kinds of output. A programmer may be evaluated by completed projects, while a manager’s contribution may include mentoring, resolving conflict, and sharing information before problems become visible. Remote arrangements can reduce commuting time and allow uninterrupted concentration, but they may also weaken informal communication. The result depends on task design, household conditions, digital systems, and organizational culture. Studies that report an average increase or decrease in productivity can therefore conceal important variation. A more useful question is not whether remote work is universally productive, but which activities benefit from distance, which require direct interaction, and how teams can coordinate the two.

  1. What is the author’s main argument?
    1. Remote work always increases productivity.
    2. Productivity effects vary by task and context.

8: Ocean Acidification

The ocean absorbs a substantial share of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. This absorption slows the accumulation of the gas in the air, but it also changes seawater chemistry. When carbon dioxide dissolves in water, it forms compounds that reduce pH and decrease the availability of carbonate ions. Many marine organisms use these ions to build shells or skeletons. The effects are not identical across species: some organisms are highly sensitive, while others can tolerate or temporarily adapt to changing conditions. Nevertheless, adaptation may carry energetic costs, leaving less energy for growth or reproduction. Ocean acidification is therefore not simply a matter of whether a species survives. It can alter development, competition, food webs, and the functioning of entire ecosystems.

9: Public Libraries

Public libraries are sometimes judged mainly by the number of printed books they lend. This measure is useful, but it captures only part of their contemporary role. Libraries may provide internet access, quiet study space, language classes, employment assistance, children’s programs, and help navigating government services. These functions are especially important for people who lack reliable technology or a suitable place to work at home. At the same time, expanding services can create tension. Staff may be expected to address complex social needs without sufficient training or funding. A realistic assessment of libraries must therefore recognize both their widening public value and the resources required to sustain it. Praising libraries as universal solutions while failing to support their staff may increase expectations without increasing capacity.

10: Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance is often described as if individual bacteria consciously adapt to survive treatment. In reality, a bacterial population already contains genetic variation. When an antibiotic kills susceptible bacteria, resistant organisms are more likely to survive and reproduce. The drug does not create resistance simply because it is used; rather, its use changes which variants become common. Resistance can also spread when bacteria exchange genetic material. Unnecessary prescriptions, incorrect dosing, poor infection control, and antibiotic use in agriculture can accelerate the process. Reducing misuse is essential, but it will not restore a world without resistance. The goal is to slow its development, preserve the usefulness of existing drugs, improve diagnosis, prevent infection, and support the creation of new treatments.

11: The Circular Economy

Traditional production is often described as linear: resources are extracted, transformed into products, used, and eventually discarded. The circular economy proposes a different model in which materials remain in use for as long as possible through repair, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling. Recycling is only one part of this approach and is generally less desirable than preventing waste or extending a product’s life. A device designed to be repaired, for example, may conserve more value than one that must be destroyed to recover a small amount of raw material. Yet circularity is not achieved by design alone. Affordable repair services, access to replacement parts, consumer information, and business incentives all influence whether products actually remain in use. The concept therefore requires changes in systems, not merely a new recycling symbol on packaging.

  1. The main idea is that:
    1. a circular economy requires keeping materials in use through systemic changes.
    2. recycling is the only circular strategy.
    3. all products should be destroyed for raw materials.
    4. packaging symbols automatically prevent waste.
  2. A linear model ends with:
    1. repair.
    2. discarding the product.
    3. remanufacturing.
    4. consumer education.
  3. Why may repair be preferable to recycling?
    1. It can preserve more of a product’s existing value.
    2. It always requires more raw material.
    3. It eliminates the need for design.
    4. It makes replacement parts unavailable.
  4. The word “extracted” is closest in meaning to:

12: Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity refers to the nervous system’s capacity to change in response to experience, injury, and repeated activity. Popular accounts sometimes present this capacity as evidence that anyone can rapidly transform any mental ability. Such claims exaggerate both the speed and the freedom of change. The brain remains plastic throughout life, but age, health, prior experience, motivation, and the intensity of practice influence what changes occur. Moreover, adaptation can be beneficial or harmful. Repeated musical practice may strengthen useful networks, while chronic stress may reinforce patterns associated with anxiety. Neuroplasticity should therefore be understood as a general property of the nervous system, not a guarantee of unlimited self-improvement. Effective training requires repetition, appropriate difficulty, feedback, and sufficient time for changes to stabilize.

13: Energy Storage

Solar and wind power are variable: their output changes with sunlight, weather, and time of day. This variability does not make renewable electricity unusable, but it creates a need for flexibility across the energy system. Batteries can store electricity for later use, yet no single storage technology is ideal for every duration or location. Lithium-ion batteries respond quickly and are useful for short-term balancing, while pumped-storage systems can move large amounts of energy but require suitable geography. Other approaches include thermal storage, compressed air, hydrogen, and demand management. The central challenge is not simply to build the largest possible battery. It is to combine generation, transmission, storage, forecasting, and flexible consumption so that supply and demand remain balanced.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Renewable variability requires a combination of flexible energy solutions.
    2. Only one storage technology should be used everywhere.

14: Food Deserts

The term “food desert” is commonly used for an area where residents have limited physical access to affordable, nutritious food. The image of a desert suggests that simply adding a supermarket will solve the problem. In practice, food access is shaped by more than distance. Prices, working hours, transport reliability, cultural preferences, disability, cooking facilities, and available time all affect what households can buy and prepare. A new store may improve options while remaining unaffordable to many residents. Conversely, small local shops may be physically close but offer a narrow range of fresh food. Researchers increasingly distinguish between the presence of food retailers and people’s practical ability to use them. Effective policy may therefore require transport, income support, accessible design, and community consultation in addition to new stores.

  1. What is the main argument?
    1. Food access depends on multiple practical factors, not distance alone.
    2. Every neighborhood needs only one supermarket.
    3. Local shops always provide sufficient fresh food.
    4. Transport has no effect on food purchasing.
  2. Why may the “desert” image be misleading?
    1. It may imply that adding a store is a complete solution.

15: Citizen Science

Citizen-science projects invite members of the public to collect observations, classify images, or monitor environmental conditions. Because thousands of participants can contribute across wide areas, these projects may generate data at a scale that a small research team could not achieve alone. Critics sometimes question the accuracy of observations made by non-specialists. This concern is legitimate, but it does not mean that all public contributions are unreliable. Projects can use training, repeated measurements, automated checks, expert review, and statistical methods to identify errors. Professional research also contains measurement problems and requires quality control. The scientific value of citizen science therefore depends less on whether participants hold formal qualifications than on whether the project is designed to produce, test, and document reliable data.

16: Algorithmic Bias

An algorithm can apply the same rule to every person and still produce unequal outcomes. This occurs because equality of procedure does not guarantee equality of context. A hiring system trained on historical records may learn patterns that reflect past discrimination. Even if the program does not receive information about gender or ethnicity directly, other variables may act as proxies. Bias can also enter through the definition of success, the selection of training data, or the way errors are valued. Eliminating one sensitive variable is therefore not enough. Responsible evaluation requires testing performance across groups, examining false-positive and false-negative rates, documenting design choices, and creating ways for affected people to challenge decisions. Fairness is not a property that can be assumed from technical consistency alone.

  1. What is the main argument?

17: Archaeology and Trade

Archaeologists often use the movement of objects to reconstruct ancient trade. If stone, pottery, or metal from one region appears far away, some form of exchange probably occurred. Yet an object’s final location does not reveal the complete route it traveled. Goods may have passed through several communities, been given as gifts, taken during conflict, or carried by migrants. Similar-looking objects may also have been produced locally using copied techniques. Researchers therefore combine material analysis with settlement patterns, written evidence when available, and knowledge of geography. Trade networks are not simply lines drawn between a source and a destination. They are hypotheses built from incomplete traces and must remain open to revision when new evidence appears.

18: Music and Cognition

Claims that music training makes children universally more intelligent are appealing but difficult to support. Students who take music lessons may differ from other students in family income, parental involvement, school quality, or motivation. If these factors are not controlled, improved academic performance cannot automatically be attributed to music. Experimental studies provide stronger evidence, yet their results are often narrower than popular headlines suggest. Training may improve specific auditory, motor, or attentional skills, and sustained practice can teach discipline and sensitivity to patterns. These benefits are meaningful without being transformed into a promise of general intellectual superiority. Music education can be defended for cultural, emotional, social, and artistic reasons even when its cognitive effects are modest or specific.

  1. What is the main argument?
    1. Music education has valuable benefits, but broad intelligence claims should be treated cautiously.
    2. Music training has no value.
    3. Every child who studies music becomes intellectually superior.

19: Water Management

Building a larger reservoir can increase the amount of water available during dry periods, but storage capacity alone does not guarantee water security. A system may lose significant quantities through leaking pipes, inefficient irrigation, evaporation, or poorly designed pricing. Water quality can also limit usable supply even when total volume appears sufficient. Furthermore, reservoirs alter river flow, ecosystems, and communities, creating costs that are not visible in a simple calculation of capacity. Integrated water management therefore considers demand reduction, reuse, infrastructure maintenance, watershed protection, and fair allocation alongside new construction. The goal is not to maximize stored water at any cost, but to provide reliable access while preserving the ecological and social systems on which supply depends.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Water security requires more than increasing storage capacity.
    2. Larger reservoirs solve every water problem.

20: Social Trust

Social trust refers broadly to the expectation that unfamiliar people will usually behave in a reasonably cooperative and honest manner. High trust can reduce the need for costly monitoring and make collective action easier. However, trust is not simply a moral quality possessed by individuals. It is shaped by institutions, inequality, corruption, past experience, and perceptions of fairness. Asking citizens to trust more may have little effect when public systems repeatedly fail or apply rules inconsistently. At the same time, complete suspicion can become self-reinforcing: people withdraw from shared institutions, those institutions weaken, and further distrust follows. Building trust therefore requires both trustworthy behavior from organizations and opportunities for people to experience successful cooperation.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Social trust depends on institutions and experience as well as individual attitudes.
    2. Trust is purely a personal moral choice.
    3. Monitoring always increases cooperation.
    4. Institutions have no effect on public behavior.
  2. One possible benefit of high trust is:

21: Wildlife Corridors

Protected areas are often imagined as isolated islands of nature surrounded by human development. Yet many species need to move between habitats to find food, reproduce, or respond to climate change. Wildlife corridors are strips or networks of suitable habitat intended to connect separated populations. Their effectiveness depends on more than drawing a green line on a map. A corridor may be too narrow, exposed to roads, lacking water, or avoided by a species because of noise and light. It may also benefit one animal while increasing disease transmission or conflict for another. Conservation planners therefore evaluate which species are expected to use a corridor, what barriers exist, and how the surrounding landscape may change. Connectivity is a valuable goal, but its design must be based on ecological evidence rather than appearance alone.

  1. What is the main argument?
    1. Wildlife corridors can support movement but require species-specific, evidence-based design.
    2. Any green line on a map creates effective connectivity.
    3. Protected areas should always remain isolated.
    4. Every species uses the same corridor equally.
  2. Why do species move between habitats?
    1. To find resources, reproduce, or respond to changing conditions
    2. To increase artificial lighting
    3. To avoid all food
    4. To remain permanently isolated
  3. Which corridor limitation is mentioned?
    1. Exposure to roads
    2. Too much scientific evidence
    3. Unlimited water
    4. Complete absence of development
  4. Why might a species avoid a corridor?
    1. Noise or light may disturb it.
    2. All corridors lack vegetation.
    3. Movement is biologically impossible.
    4. Maps prevent reproduction.
  5. What possible negative effect is mentioned?

22: Repatriation of Cultural Objects

Museums in Europe and North America hold many objects acquired during periods of colonial rule, military occupation, or unequal trade. Requests for repatriation ask that some of these objects be returned to communities or states of origin. Opponents sometimes argue that large museums preserve objects safely and make them available to an international public. Supporters respond that preservation does not erase questions about consent, ownership, and historical injustice. They also note that source communities are not merely places where objects were found; they may maintain cultural, spiritual, or political relationships with them. Repatriation is rarely a simple reversal of a single transaction, because records may be incomplete and modern borders may not match historical identities. Even so, uncertainty does not remove the obligation to investigate provenance, share authority, and negotiate in good faith.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Repatriation involves preservation, ownership, consent, and historical responsibility.
    2. All museum objects were acquired legally and equally.
    3. Preservation automatically resolves ownership disputes.
    4. Modern borders perfectly match historical communities.
  2. What argument do opponents of repatriation make?
    1. Large museums may preserve objects and provide broad access.
    2. Source communities have no relationship to objects.
    3. Records are always complete.
    4. Colonial rule never affected collections.
  3. Supporters respond that preservation:
    1. does not settle ethical and ownership questions.
    2. is entirely irrelevant.
    3. proves consent existed.
    4. eliminates historical injustice.
  4. The word “provenance” refers to:
    1. the history of an object’s origin and ownership.
    2. the temperature of a museum.
    3. the artistic quality of a label.
    4. the number of visitors.
  5. Why is repatriation often complex?
    1. Records and historical identities may not align neatly with the present.
    2. Objects have no origin.
    3. Museums never keep documentation.
    4. Every transaction occurred yesterday.
  6. What does “them” refer to in “relationships with them”?
    1. the cultural objects.
    2. modern borders.
    3. international visitors.
    4. museum buildings.
  7. Which statement is supported?
    1. Uncertainty should lead to investigation rather than automatic dismissal.

23: Academic Procrastination

Academic procrastination is often interpreted as poor time management, but delay can also regulate emotion. A student may postpone an assignment because beginning it produces anxiety, boredom, uncertainty, or fear of evaluation. Avoidance brings immediate relief, which reinforces the habit even though it creates greater stress later. A calendar can help, but it may not address the emotional reward of postponement. Effective strategies reduce the discomfort of starting: breaking work into very small actions, defining an imperfect first draft, removing ambiguous instructions, and studying in an environment with fewer distractions. Self-criticism may feel motivating, yet it can increase threat and make avoidance more attractive. The aim is not to wait for complete confidence, but to make the next action clear and manageable enough to begin.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Procrastination may be an emotional-regulation problem, not only a scheduling problem.
    2. Calendars always eliminate procrastination.

    2. It contains no dates.
    3. Time has no relationship to assignments.
    4. Students cannot read calendars.
  5. Which strategy is recommended?
    1. Defining a small, imperfect first step
    2. Waiting for complete confidence
    3. Increasing ambiguity

24: Microplastics

Microplastics are small plastic particles found in oceans, rivers, soil, air, food, and living organisms. Their widespread presence has led to understandable concern, but detecting a particle is not the same as demonstrating harm. Risk depends on concentration, size, chemical composition, exposure route, and biological response. Some laboratory studies use concentrations far higher than those commonly measured in natural environments, which can help identify possible mechanisms but may not predict ordinary exposure. Conversely, current measurements may underestimate very small particles or long-term accumulation. Scientists must therefore avoid both reassurance based on incomplete detection and alarm based on unrealistic experiments. The central task is to improve measurement, compare laboratory conditions with real-world exposure, and determine which particles create meaningful biological effects.

  1. What is the main argument?
    1. The presence of microplastics must be distinguished from demonstrated risk.
    2. Every detected particle causes severe harm.
    3. Microplastics exist only in oceans.
    4. Laboratory studies always reproduce natural exposure exactly.
  2. Which factor influences risk?

    2. To copy ordinary exposure perfectly
    3. To prove measurement is unnecessary
    4. To remove all particles
  4. What limitation do such studies have?
    1. They may not predict effects at real-world concentrations.
    2. They cannot observe any mechanism.
    3. They always underestimate exposure.
    4. They use no particles.
  5. What may current measurements miss?
    1. Very small particles or long-term accumulation
    2. All visible objects
    3. Every chemical compound
    4. Laboratory equipment
  6. The word “Conversely” introduces:
    1. an opposite concern.
    2. a repetition of the previous point.

    1. both premature reassurance and exaggerated alarm.
    2. all scientific measurement.
    3. comparing studies.

25: Open Science

Open science seeks to make research methods, data, software, and publications more accessible. Greater openness can allow other researchers to verify results, reuse materials, and identify errors. Yet openness is not a single action and cannot always mean unrestricted public release. Medical data, information about endangered species, or knowledge held by Indigenous communities may require protection. Data are also difficult to interpret without documentation, and poorly maintained repositories can create the appearance of transparency without enabling meaningful reuse. Responsible open science therefore balances accessibility with privacy, consent, security, and context. Its success should be judged not only by whether a file is online, but by whether qualified users can understand its origin, limitations, and appropriate uses.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Open science should increase access while protecting sensitive information and context.
    2. All research data must be released without restriction.
    3. Online files are automatically understandable.
    4. Privacy has no place in science.
  2. One benefit of openness is:
    1. allowing verification of results.
    2. eliminating the need for methods.
    3. preventing all errors.
    4. making documentation unnecessary.
  3. Which information may require protection?
    1. Medical data
    2. Published article titles
    3. Public weather forecasts
    4. General mathematical symbols
  4. Why can unrestricted release be problematic?
    1. Some data involve privacy, security, or community rights.
    2. Researchers cannot use computers.
    3. Verification is always harmful.
    4. All repositories are secure.
  5. What problem is created by weak documentation?
    1. Users may be unable to interpret or reuse data correctly.
    2. Data become automatically private.
    3. Research methods become perfect.
    4. Repositories disappear instantly.
  6. The phrase “appearance of transparency” suggests:
    1. something may look open without being practically usable.
    2. all online files are secret.
    3. transparency requires no context.
    4. research should avoid public access.
  7. Which balance does the author support?
    1. Accessibility with privacy, consent, security, and context
    2. Speed with no documentation
    3. Secrecy with no verification
    4. Publication with no methods
  8. Which statement is supported?
    1. Meaningful openness requires understandable information about the data.
    2. Uploading a file is sufficient evidence of responsible openness.
    3. All knowledge has the same ethical status.
    4. Qualified users do not need limitations explained.
  9. The author’s view of open science is:
    1. supportive but attentive to ethical and practical limits.
    2. entirely opposed.
    3. focused only on publication fees.

26: Aging Populations

Population aging is often framed primarily as a burden: more older people may require pensions, health care, and long-term support. These pressures are real, but the burden narrative can obscure variation among older adults and ignore their contributions. Many continue working, caring for relatives, volunteering, paying taxes, and supporting community organizations. Policy outcomes depend partly on health across the life course, workplace flexibility, housing, transport, migration, and the distribution of unpaid care. Raising the retirement age may improve public finances for some groups while disadvantaging people in physically demanding jobs or with poor health. Effective policy therefore cannot rely on chronological age alone. It must consider capacity, inequality, changing family structures, and opportunities for participation.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Population aging creates challenges and contributions that require nuanced policy.
    2. All older adults are economically inactive.
    3. Chronological age is sufficient for every policy.
    4. Raising retirement age benefits every worker equally.

27: Artificial Light at Night

Artificial light at night has made streets safer to navigate and extended the hours available for work and recreation. However, light that is excessive, poorly directed, or unusually blue can affect both humans and wildlife. Many organisms use natural cycles of light and darkness to regulate sleep, migration, feeding, or reproduction. Bright illumination may attract insects, disorient birds, and alter predator-prey relationships. The solution is not necessarily to eliminate outdoor lighting. Shielded fixtures, warmer wavelengths, lower intensity, and lights activated only when needed can reduce unnecessary exposure while preserving visibility. Effective lighting policy treats darkness as an environmental resource and asks not only how much light is produced, but where, when, and in which direction it travels.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Outdoor lighting has benefits but should be designed to limit unnecessary ecological effects.
    2. All outdoor lighting must be eliminated.

28: Financial Literacy

Financial-literacy programs aim to teach people how to budget, save, borrow, and invest. Knowledge can improve decisions, but education is often asked to solve problems created by complex products, low income, unstable employment, or misleading sales practices. A person may understand the cost of high-interest credit and still use it during an emergency because no affordable alternative exists. Long courses may also have limited effect if the information is forgotten before a relevant decision occurs. Some researchers therefore support “just-in-time” guidance delivered when people choose a loan, pension, or insurance product. Education remains useful, but it should be combined with clear disclosure, consumer protection, simpler products, and policies that expand genuine options.

  1. What is the main argument?
    1. Financial education is useful but cannot replace structural protections and real alternatives.
    2. Knowledge never affects decisions.
    3. High-interest credit is always chosen from ignorance.

29: Language-Learning Anxiety

Language learners sometimes know the answer in private but become unable to speak when observed. This reaction is not evidence that the knowledge has vanished. Anxiety consumes attention that would otherwise support word retrieval, sentence planning, and monitoring. Fear of negative evaluation may also cause learners to check every phrase before speaking, making conversation slow and unnatural. Simply demanding confidence rarely helps. Confidence usually develops after repeated experiences of communicating successfully at an appropriate level of difficulty. Teachers can reduce pressure by allowing preparation time, using predictable routines, correcting selectively, and distinguishing mistakes that block meaning from those that do not. The objective is not a classroom without errors, but a setting in which errors provide information without becoming a social threat.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Anxiety can interfere with language performance, and supportive practice can reduce its effects.
    2. Knowledge disappears permanently when a learner is observed.

30: Telemedicine

Telemedicine can reduce travel, shorten waiting time, and improve access for patients who live far from medical facilities. It is particularly useful for follow-up conversations, medication reviews, and conditions that can be assessed through discussion or visible symptoms. However, remote care is not interchangeable with in-person examination. Some diagnoses require physical contact, laboratory tests, or subtle observations that a camera may not capture. Digital access is also uneven: patients may lack devices, privacy, reliable internet, or confidence using the platform. A well-designed service therefore does not ask whether remote care should replace clinics. It identifies which encounters are suitable for distance, provides alternatives, and ensures that convenience for the health system does not become exclusion for the patient.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Telemedicine is useful for some encounters but should not automatically replace in-person care.

חלק מהטקסטים מציגים תהליך שעדיין מתפתח, ולכן הכותבים משתמשים במונחים זהירים כגון may, could, tends to ו־is likely to.

31: Urban Mobility

Traffic congestion is often addressed by adding road capacity. Although a wider road may initially reduce delays, easier driving can encourage more people to travel by car, choose longer routes, or move farther from work. Over time, the new capacity may fill, a pattern known as induced demand. This does not mean that every road project is useless. Freight routes, dangerous intersections, and rapidly growing areas may require targeted construction. However, congestion policy should also examine public transport, walking, cycling, parking prices, land use, and flexible working hours. The objective is not merely to move more vehicles through a corridor, but to help more people reach destinations reliably, safely, and with reasonable environmental cost.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Reducing congestion requires attention to mobility, not only road capacity.
    2. Every road project is useless.
    3. Wider roads permanently eliminate traffic.
    4. Only private cars can provide reliable travel.
  2. What is induced demand?

    2. Drivers permanently avoid wider roads.
    3. Public transport creates empty cities.
    4. Freight eliminates land use.
  3. Why may initial reductions in delay not last?
    1. Travel behavior may change in response to easier driving.
    2. Roads become physically narrower immediately.
    3. All residents stop traveling.
    4. Walking becomes impossible.
  4. Which road project may still be justified?

    1. vehicles and helping people reach destinations.
    2. roads and buildings.
    3. freight and all economic activity.
    4. cities and rural areas only.

32: Inoculation Against Misinformation

Correcting false information after people have accepted it can be difficult. One preventive approach, sometimes called psychological inoculation, exposes people to a weakened example of a misleading technique and explains how it works. A brief lesson might show how emotional language, false experts, or selective evidence can create a persuasive but unreliable claim. The goal is not to tell people what opinion to hold, but to help them recognize methods of manipulation across topics. Inoculation is not permanent immunity. Its effects may fade, and people may still accept misinformation that fits their identity or comes from a trusted source. Nevertheless, teaching general warning signs before exposure may complement fact-checking after a false claim has spread.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Teaching manipulation techniques in advance may help people resist misinformation.
    2. Fact-checking is always immediate and easy.
    3. Inoculation guarantees permanent immunity.

  5. What limitation is identified?
    1. The protective effect may weaken over time.
    2. People can never learn warning signs.

33: The Soil Microbiome

Soil is not merely a support that holds plant roots. It contains complex communities of bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that decompose material, cycle nutrients, influence soil structure, and interact with plants. Interest in the soil microbiome has produced proposals to add beneficial microbes to agricultural fields. Such treatments may help under certain conditions, but introduced organisms often fail to establish themselves because they must compete with existing communities and cope with local temperature, moisture, and chemistry. Changing farming practices may sometimes be more effective than adding a single microbial product. Reducing excessive disturbance, increasing organic matter, and diversifying crops can create conditions in which useful biological functions develop. The key question is not only which organism is added, but whether the surrounding ecosystem allows it to persist and act.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Soil microbial treatments depend on the ecological conditions in which organisms are introduced.
    2. Soil serves only to hold roots.
    3. Adding one microbe always transforms a field.
    4. Existing soil communities do not compete.
  2. Which function of soil organisms is mentioned?

34: Translation and Meaning

Translation is sometimes imagined as replacing each word in one language with an equivalent word in another. This model works poorly because meaning is distributed across grammar, context, tone, cultural reference, and the expectations of a particular audience. A phrase that sounds polite in one language may sound distant or overly formal in another. Translators therefore make choices about what to preserve: literal wording, emotional effect, rhythm, ambiguity, or cultural familiarity. No choice is neutral, and different purposes justify different solutions. A legal contract may require terminological precision, while a children’s story may require natural dialogue and accessibility. Good translation is not evidence that the translator has disappeared. It is evidence that many visible and invisible decisions have been made coherently.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Translation requires contextual choices beyond word-for-word substitution.
    2. Every word has one exact equivalent in every language.
    3. Good translators make no decisions.
    4. Legal and literary translation require identical priorities.
  2. Why does word replacement work poorly?
    1. Meaning depends on grammar, context, tone, and culture.
    2. Languages contain no words.
    3. Grammar is identical everywhere.
    4. Audiences have no expectations.
  3. What example illustrates cultural or tonal difference?
    1. A polite phrase may sound overly formal in another language.
    2. Every phrase keeps the same emotional effect.
    3. Legal contracts use no terminology.
    4. Children’s stories contain no dialogue.
  4. Which element may a translator choose to preserve?
    1. Rhythm
    2. Only dictionary order
    3. All possible meanings simultaneously
    4. No aspect of the original
  5. Why may a legal contract require a different approach?
    1. Precise terminology may be especially important.
    2. Contracts prioritize playful dialogue.
    3. Legal meaning depends only on rhythm.
    4. Accuracy is irrelevant.
  6. The word “coherently” is closest in meaning to:
    1. in a consistent and logically connected way.
    2. randomly.
    3. secretly.
    4. without purpose.

    1. Each translation decision affects how the text is understood.
    2. Translators should avoid making choices.
    3. Only literal wording has an effect.
    4. All choices produce identical results.
  8. Which statement is supported?
    1. Different translation purposes may require different priorities.
    2. Natural dialogue is always wrong.
    3. Cultural familiarity should never be considered.
    4. Invisible decisions have no value.
  9. The final sentence challenges the idea that:
    1. a good translation involves no visible translator judgment.
    2. translation can be coherent.
    3. language contains tone.
    4. children read stories.

35: Workplace Automation

Predictions about automation often divide jobs into two categories: those that will disappear and those that will remain. In practice, technologies usually affect tasks before they eliminate entire occupations. Software may automate routine data entry while increasing demand for interpretation, communication, or exception handling within the same job. Whether workers benefit depends on how organizations redesign roles, distribute productivity gains, and provide training. Automation can remove repetitive work, but it can also intensify monitoring or reduce employee discretion. The relevant question is therefore not only what a technology can technically perform. It is who decides how the technology is introduced, which tasks are valued, and whether workers have opportunities to influence the transition.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Automation changes tasks and outcomes depend on organizational choices.
    2. Every automated task eliminates an entire occupation.
    3. Technology affects all workers identically.
    4. Training has no role in transitions.
  2. What distinction does the author make?
    1. Tasks may be automated without the entire job disappearing.
    2. Jobs and tasks are always identical.
    3. Communication is always automated first.

36: Climate Migration

Climate change can influence migration by affecting water, crops, employment, health, and exposure to disasters. Yet it is rarely the sole reason a person moves. Households respond differently depending on income, social networks, legal status, land ownership, and access to assistance. Some people migrate temporarily, some move permanently, and others remain because they prefer to stay or lack the resources to leave. Describing all affected people as “climate refugees” can draw attention to serious risks, but it may also conceal these differences and imply a legal category that does not exist in many systems. Policy should support safe mobility where necessary while also helping communities adapt in place. Movement and immobility can both be responses to environmental pressure.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Climate influences migration through complex interactions and does not produce one uniform response.
    2. Climate is always the only reason people move.
    3. Every affected household migrates permanently.

    2. It contains no reference to climate.
    3. It guarantees legal protection everywhere.
    4. It prevents public attention.
  6. The word “sole” is closest in meaning to:
    1. only.
    2. indirect.

37: Museum Accessibility

Museum accessibility is sometimes reduced to the presence of a ramp. Physical access is essential, but visitors may also face sensory, cognitive, linguistic, financial, and social barriers. A person may enter the building yet be unable to read small labels, tolerate crowded sound, understand specialist vocabulary, or afford transport and admission. Accessibility should therefore be considered throughout exhibition design rather than added after decisions are complete. Clear language, seating, tactile materials, captions, quiet hours, multilingual information, and flexible ticketing can benefit many visitors, including people who do not identify as disabled. Universal design does not mean that one solution serves everyone. It means anticipating variation and providing more than one way to enter, understand, navigate, and participate.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Museum accessibility includes many barriers and should be integrated into design.

38: Interdisciplinary Education

Interdisciplinary education asks students to connect methods and ideas from more than one field. A course on urban flooding, for example, might combine engineering, climate science, economics, public policy, and community history. Supporters argue that complex problems do not respect academic boundaries. Critics worry that breadth may come at the expense of depth and that students may use concepts superficially. This tension cannot be solved by simply placing several subjects in the same timetable. Strong interdisciplinary work requires a clear problem, sufficient grounding in the contributing disciplines, and explicit attention to differences in evidence and method. Its value lies not in dissolving every boundary, but in helping students understand when one perspective is insufficient and how distinct forms of knowledge can be combined without pretending they are identical.

  1. What is the main idea?
    1. Effective interdisciplinary education combines fields carefully around a clear problem.
    2. Academic disciplines should be completely eliminated.
    3. Placing subjects together automatically creates integration.

    2. Courses may contain too much disciplinary grounding.
    3. Problems may become too clear.
    4. Methods may become more explicit.
  4. Why is a shared timetable insufficient?

במקום “חסר לי אוצר מילים”, כתבו “לא הכרתי את persist, אבל יכולתי להסיק מן הביטוי allows it to persist and act שמדובר בהמשך קיום”.

Cambridge English –
