באנגלית טבעית מילים נוטות להגיע בקבוצות: reach a conclusion, raise awareness, pose a threat, take responsibility, meet a deadline.
Despite extensive research, scientists have not yet reached a definite ___.
אם החלק השני הוא תוצאה, מילים כמו therefore, consequently או as a result הופכות רלוונטיות. תלמיד שלא מסמן לעצמו את היחס הלוגי עלול לבחור מילה שנשמעת “גבוהה” אך משנה את משמעות המשפט.
גם הדקדוק שמופיע משני צדי החסר הוא כלי. אחרי despite צריך בדרך כלל שם עצם או gerund, בעוד although פותחת clause. אחרי suggest לא משתמשים בדרך כלל במבנה suggest someone to do something.
Reading and Use of English של Cambridge, שבו תרגילי cloze בודקים בין היתר collocations, idioms, phrasal verbs והבדלי משמעות.
חשבו על המילה issue. תלמיד יכול ללמוד שפירושה “נושא” או “בעיה”, אבל באנגלית היא יכולה להופיע בצירופים כמו address an issue, raise an issue, resolve an issue, pressing issue ו־controversial issue. כל צירוף מוסיף יכולת להשתמש במילה, לא רק לזהות אותה.
לכן רשימות של “1000 מילים לבגרות” יכולות לעזור, אבל הן אינן מספיקות לבדן. אם לומדים achieve = להשיג ולא פוגשים achieve a goal, achieve success, achieve significant progress, הידע נשאר צר. עדיף ללמוד פחות מילים בכל מפגש אבל לחבר לכל אחת שתיים או שלוש שכנות טבעיות.
השיטה יעילה במיוחד כשמייצרים משפטים הקשורים לחיים. במקום לשנן meet a deadline, תלמיד יכול לכתוב: I had to meet a deadline for my school project on Thursday.
I lived in London for five years לבין I have lived in London for five years אינו רק “Past Simple מול Present Perfect”. הוא תלוי בשאלה אם התקופה הסתיימה או עדיין רלוונטית להווה. תרגילי completion טובים מאלצים את התלמיד לקרוא את כל הסיטואציה ולא לחפש מילת זמן אחת.
אותו עיקרון חל על conditionals. תלמיד עשוי לזכור את הנוסחה של Third Conditional, אך המשפט If the company had invested earlier, it ___ in a stronger position today
However, therefore, whereas, nevertheless, consequently, despite, although, in addition
Despite the rain נכון; although it was raining נכון. החלפה ביניהן בלי לשנות את המבנה מייצרת משפט שגוי.
גם therefore ו־however אינם רק פריטי vocabulary.

אם טעיתם ב־make a decision לעומת do a decision, הבעיה היא collocation. כתבו את הצירוף כולו, לא רק decision. אחר כך הוסיפו עוד שני צירופים: make an effort, make progress. כך המוח לומד משפחה ולא פרט בודד.
אם השגיאה נבעה ממילה שלא הכרתם, אל תמהרו לרשום רק את התרגום. הוסיפו חלק דיבר, צירוף אופייני ומשפט. לדוגמה: compelling – adjective – compelling evidence – The researchers found compelling evidence that….
What issue do you think schools should raise awareness of?
The committee decided to ___ the proposal ובחר prevent במקום postpone.
אם הוא אומר I suggested him to…, המורה יכול לעצור בעדינות ולהראות מבנה טבעי יותר.
Had you known something earlier this year, what might you have done differently?
ביטויים כמו draw a conclusion, provide evidence, raise concerns ו־take into account מופיעים בהרבה הקשרים לימודיים.
למשל, אפשר להבין גם את make וגם את do, אבל צריך להכיר make progress.
במילה כמו issue, לדוגמה, חשוב לראות כיצד משתמשים ב־address an issue או raise an issue.
במקום ללמוד רק evidence = ראיות, למדו provide evidence, compelling evidence, evidence suggests that….
What should people take into account when choosing a job?
Can Dos: Independent User II, 5 Point Bagrut, B2
Cambridge English – C1 Advanced, Reading and Use of English
Cambridge English הוא גוף מרכזי ומוכר בתחום הערכת אנגלית. מבנה C1 Advanced מדגים כיצד בחירה מדויקת של מילים יכולה לבדוק collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms, grammar והבדלי משמעות. אף שהבחינה אינה בחינת הבגרות הישראלית, היא מספקת מסגרת מקצועית טובה להבנת סוגי הידע שתרגילי cloze מתקדמים יכולים לפתח.
Council of Europe – CEFR Companion Volume
