אבל כאשר מופיעה ההגדרה to make something smaller or less, הוא אינו מקשר מיד בין השניים.
1 – The Library of Things
Read the text.
I In many cities, people own objects that they use only a few times a year. A drill may be needed for one afternoon. A large cake tin might be used only for a birthday. Camping equipment can stay in a cupboard for months. This has led to the creation of "libraries of things" – places where people borrow useful objects instead of buying them.
II One such library opened in a neighborhood community center. Members pay a small yearly fee and can borrow tools, kitchen equipment, games and even machines for cleaning carpets. The organizers say the idea saves money, but they believe its environmental effect is just as important. When several families share one object, fewer new products need to be manufactured.
III At first, some residents were worried that borrowed objects would often be returned damaged. The organizers therefore introduced short demonstrations for complicated equipment and clear rules about returning items. Surprisingly, damage has been rare. Members say they are especially careful because they know other people will use the items after them.
IV The project has produced another unexpected result. People who once came only to borrow something now stay to talk, exchange practical advice and sometimes volunteer. According to the center manager, the library has become a meeting place as well as a practical service.
V The organizers do not expect borrowing to replace shopping completely. People will still want to own objects they use regularly. However, they hope residents will begin asking a simple question before every purchase: "Do I really need to own this?"

2 – Cooler Streets
I On very hot summer days, the temperature on one street can be noticeably different from the temperature a few blocks away. Researchers have found that trees are one reason. Their leaves provide shade, while water released from the leaves can also help cool the surrounding air.
II For this reason, several cities have begun mapping neighborhoods with few trees. The maps are combined with information about temperatures, population and public spaces. City planners then decide where new trees could provide the greatest benefit.
III Planting a tree, however, is only the beginning. Young trees require regular watering and protection. Choosing the wrong species can create problems if roots damage sidewalks or if a tree cannot survive local weather conditions.
IV Some cities have invited residents to help. Volunteers measure young trees, report damaged branches and record whether the ground is dry. This information allows maintenance teams to respond more quickly. It also gives residents a direct role in caring for their neighborhood.
V Trees cannot solve every problem caused by extreme heat. Buildings, road materials and access to shaded public areas also matter. Nevertheless, researchers say that careful planting can be one useful part of a larger strategy for making cities more comfortable.

3 – Repair Cafés
I A broken lamp or toaster often has a small problem that could be repaired. Yet many people throw such products away because they do not know how to fix them or because professional repair seems too expensive. Repair cafés were created as one response to this problem.
II At a repair café, visitors bring broken household items and meet volunteers with practical skills. The volunteers do not simply take the object away and return it later. Whenever possible, they ask the owner to sit beside them and participate in the repair.
III This approach has two purposes. First, repairing an object can prevent waste and extend its useful life. Second, visitors learn basic skills and may feel more confident trying simple repairs in the future.
IV Not every product can be fixed. Replacement parts may be unavailable, or modern devices may be designed in ways that make them difficult to open. Volunteers therefore explain honestly when repair is not practical.
V Organizers say success should not be measured only by the number of objects repaired. A visitor who learns why an appliance failed, even if it cannot be saved, leaves with useful knowledge. For many repair cafés, that learning is part of the service.
- Why do people sometimes throw repairable products away?

4 – Why Teenagers Need Sleep
I Many teenagers know the feeling of sitting in a morning lesson while struggling to stay awake. The obvious explanation might seem to be that they simply went to bed too late. Sleep researchers, however, say the issue is more complicated.
II During adolescence, natural changes in the body's internal clock can make young people feel sleepy later at night. This does not mean schedules have no effect. Phones, homework, social activities and early school mornings can all reduce the amount of sleep teenagers get.
III Lack of sleep may influence concentration, mood and memory. This matters at school because learning depends not only on being present in class but also on being able to pay attention and process new information.
IV Researchers suggest several practical habits. Going to bed at roughly the same time each night may help. Reducing bright screen use shortly before sleep can also make bedtime calmer. These habits are not instant solutions, but consistency can make them more useful.
V Parents sometimes focus only on telling teenagers to "go to bed earlier." Experts recommend discussing the entire evening routine instead. The goal is to identify which activities are pushing sleep later and decide which ones can realistically be changed.

5 – Citizen Scientists Count Birds
I Scientists who study wildlife face a simple problem: they cannot be everywhere at once. To understand changes in bird populations, for example, researchers may need observations from thousands of locations. This is where citizen science can help.
II In a bird-count project, members of the public spend a fixed amount of time observing birds in a garden, park or other local area. They record the species they see and send the information to a central database.
III A single observation may not tell researchers very much. However, when thousands of people collect information in a similar way, patterns can appear. Scientists may notice that a species is becoming more common in one region or less common in another.
IV Data quality is important. Participants therefore receive instructions about how long to observe, what area to cover and how to report uncertain identifications. Some projects also provide photographs and recordings to help volunteers recognize species.
V Citizen science does not replace professional research. Instead, it gives scientists access to information that would otherwise be difficult and expensive to collect on such a large scale. Participants, meanwhile, often say the experience makes them notice nature more carefully.
- What problem do wildlife researchers face?
- What do participants record?
- Where is the information sent?
- Why is one observation limited?
- What can large amounts of data reveal?
- Why do participants receive instructions?
- Give ONE tool used to help identify birds.

6 – Imperfect Vegetables
I Shoppers often expect fruit and vegetables to look almost identical. A carrot may taste perfectly good but be rejected because it bends. An apple may be left on the shelf because its color is uneven. Some businesses are now trying to change these expectations.
II Several supermarkets sell boxes of "imperfect" produce at a reduced price. The products may be unusually small, large or shaped, but they are suitable for eating. Stores say customers appreciate paying less while also preventing edible food from being wasted.
III Appearance is not the only reason food is wasted. Poor planning at home can also lead people to buy more than they can use. Confusion about date labels may cause another problem when consumers throw away food that is still safe.
IV Campaigners therefore warn against presenting imperfect vegetables as a complete solution. They can reduce one source of waste, but households and businesses need to examine purchasing, storage and planning as well.
V Supporters say the broader lesson is useful: visual perfection is not the same as quality. When consumers understand this, farmers and shops may have more options for selling food that previously had little commercial value.
- Why might a carrot be rejected?
- What are supermarkets selling at reduced prices?
- Why do customers appreciate these boxes?
- Give another cause of food waste.
- What problem can date labels cause?

7 – English in Remote Teams
I A software designer in Tel Aviv may begin the morning with a message from a colleague in Germany, join an online meeting with a client in the Netherlands and finish the day reading technical instructions written in English. In international teams, English is often used as a shared working language even when nobody in the conversation grew up speaking it.
II This creates a challenge that is different from passing a grammar test. Employees need to ask for clarification, explain delays, summarize decisions and disagree politely. A person may know advanced vocabulary yet still find these short workplace interactions stressful.
III Managers increasingly recognize that clear communication does not require complicated English. In fact, very long sentences and unusual vocabulary can make international communication harder. Short explanations, clear structure and confirmation of important details are often more effective.
IV Written communication matters too. A brief message such as "Can you confirm which version we should use?" may prevent hours of unnecessary work. Employees therefore benefit from learning practical phrases that match situations they actually face.
V Language confidence develops through use. Reading lists of business expressions may help, but workers also need opportunities to say them aloud, respond to unexpected questions and receive feedback. Practice becomes more useful when it resembles the real conversations waiting for them at work.
- Why may workers in different countries use English?
- Give TWO workplace communication tasks from paragraph II.
- Why can someone with advanced vocabulary still struggle?
- What do managers increasingly recognize?
- Why can complicated language be unhelpful?

8 – Quiet Hours at Museums
I Museums are often busy places filled with voices, bright displays and groups moving from room to room. For some visitors this energy is enjoyable. For others, especially people who are sensitive to noise or strong sensory stimulation, it can make a visit difficult.
II Some museums have responded by introducing "quiet hours." During these periods, visitor numbers may be limited, background sounds are reduced and flashing displays may be adjusted. Staff can also provide information in advance about which parts of the museum are likely to be noisy.
III Organizers emphasize that quiet hours are not intended to separate people permanently. The aim is to offer another way to experience the museum. Some visitors use the quieter session once and later feel more prepared to attend at other times.
IV Planning these sessions requires consultation. Museums may speak with visitors, families and accessibility organizations before deciding which changes are useful. A solution that helps one person may not address another person's needs.
V Museum staff say the process sometimes improves the experience for everyone. Clear signs, better information before a visit and quieter rest areas can help many visitors, not only those who attend designated quiet sessions.
- Why can museums be difficult for some visitors?
- Give TWO changes used during quiet hours.
- Why might information be provided in advance?
- Are quiet hours intended to separate visitors permanently?
- What may happen after someone attends a quiet session?

9 – Small Habits and Household Energy
I People often hear advice about saving energy at home: switch off lights, wash clothes at lower temperatures and avoid heating empty rooms. Individually, each action may seem too small to matter. Energy researchers say this reaction is understandable but incomplete.
II A small change repeated every day can produce a larger result over time. The effect is even greater when many households make similar changes. Researchers therefore study both technology and everyday behavior.
III Information alone, however, does not always change habits. A person may know that an appliance uses a lot of electricity but continue using it in the same way because the alternative is inconvenient. Successful advice needs to consider what people can realistically maintain.
IV Some energy companies provide digital reports comparing a household's current use with its previous use. The goal is to make an invisible activity easier to notice. When people can see a pattern, they may find it easier to decide which behavior to change.
V Researchers warn against making individuals responsible for every energy problem. Efficient buildings, public policy and cleaner energy sources also have major roles. Household habits are one part of a much larger system.
- Give TWO examples of energy-saving advice.
- Why can a small action still matter?
- Why does the effect increase across many households?
- Why may information fail to change behavior?
- What should successful advice consider?

To place individual behavior in wider context. 39. Answers vary. 40. Small repeatable energy habits can help, but wider systems also matter.
10 – Micro-Volunteering
I Many people say they would like to volunteer but cannot commit to several hours every week. A newer form of volunteering tries to solve this problem by dividing useful work into small tasks that can sometimes be completed in minutes.
II Known as micro-volunteering, these tasks may include checking a short translation, identifying an object in a historical photograph, adding information to a community map or helping a charity test whether a webpage is easy to understand.
III Organizations benefit because hundreds of small contributions can support a larger project. However, good organization is essential. A task must be clearly explained, and volunteers need to understand how their contribution will be used.
IV Critics point out that micro-volunteering cannot replace every traditional volunteer role. Some activities require training, long-term relationships or physical presence. A five-minute online task cannot provide those things.
V Supporters agree with this limitation. They argue that the value of micro-volunteering is not that it replaces other forms of service, but that it gives more people an entry point. Someone who begins with one small task may later choose to become more involved.
- What prevents some people from volunteering?
- How does micro-volunteering address this problem?
- Give TWO examples of micro-volunteering tasks.
- How can organizations benefit?
- Why is clear organization necessary?

What, why, how, according to, give one, complete.
Module E Vocabulary.
Module E Vocabulary.
3. British Council – Reading Exams.
4. Education Endowment Foundation – One to One Tuition.
One to One Tuition – EEF.
