400 שאלות Phrasal Verbs ו-Idioms מתקדמים לשאלון G – תרגול עם תשובות והבנת הקשר

יש תלמידים שמגיעים לטקסט באנגלית, קוראים את המשפט הראשון ומרגישים שהכול בשליטה. הם מכירים כמעט כל מילה. ואז מגיע משפט כמו The researchers ruled out the most obvious explanation, או The plan is still up in the air,

באנגלית, שינוי קטן של particle — מילה כמו up, out, off או through — יכול לשנות לחלוטין את משמעות הפועל. Look at, look into, look up to ו-look down on אינם ארבע גרסאות קטנות של אותו רעיון. הם מבטאים פעולות ומערכות יחסים שונות לגמרי.

התגובה הטבעית של תלמיד היא לנסות לתרגם. לפעמים זה עובד, אבל לעיתים קרובות התרגום המילולי מטעה. אם כתוב the negotiations fell through, אין כאן שום דבר שנפל פיזית דרך חור. המשמעות היא שהמשא ומתן או התוכנית לא התממשו. אם נאמר שמישהו hit the nail on the head, אין הכרח שקיים פטיש.

אחרי כמה ימים rule out, work out, turn out ו-sort out מתחילים להתערבב.

The company plans to phase out the old system next year,

The initial plan fell through, so the team had to develop an alternative,

Let's cut to the chase אינו רק מבקש "לקצר". הוא מבקש לעבור לעניין המרכזי. It's not my cup of tea

Phrasal Verbs מתקדמים: החלקיקים הקטנים שמשנים את כל המשפט

Phrasal verb הוא בדרך כלל פועל שמתחבר ל-particle אחד או יותר, והצירוף מקבל משמעות משלו. לפעמים קל לנחש אותה. Sit down ברור יחסית. אבל ברמה גבוהה מופיעים ביטויים כמו play down, single out, zero in on, iron out או bear out.

אפשר לומר turn down the offer וגם turn the offer down, וכאשר משתמשים בכינוי גוף אומרים turn it down. לעומת זאת, ב-look into the problem אי אפשר להעביר את the problem לאמצע ולומר look the problem into.

Back to square one פירושו לחזור לנקודת ההתחלה. A hard pill to swallow

Put all your eggs in one basket קל יותר לזכור כאשר מדמיינים באמת סל אחד שנופל. אחר כך מחברים את הדימוי למשמעות המופשטת: להסתמך על אפשרות אחת בלבד. אותו עיקרון עובד עם walk on eggshells, weather the storm ו-burn bridges.

The government plans to phase out the old program יכול להפוך ל-The government plans to gradually discontinue the old program.

We haven’t ruled out moving to another city. ההעברה להקשר חדש בודקת אם באמת הבנתם את הביטוי.

אחר כך נסו פעולה הפוכה: קחו ביטוי מתקדם והפכו אותו לאנגלית פשוטה. The project fell through יכול להפוך ל-The project did not happen. The issue is still up in the air יכול להפוך ל-The issue has not been decided yet.

דוגמה פשוטה: תלמיד אומר I delayed the meeting. המשפט יכול להיות נכון, אבל המורה יכול להראות גם I put the meeting off, להסביר את ההבדל ברמת הסגנון, לבקש ממנו להשתמש ב-pronoun — I put it off — ואז ליצור שאלה חדשה.

Idiom?

Phrasal verb בנוי בדרך כלל מפועל ו-particle אחד או יותר.
דוגמאות מוכרות הן turn down, look into ו-carry out.
הצירוף עשוי לקבל משמעות שאינה זהה לפועל הבסיסי.
Idiom הוא ביטוי קבוע יחסית שמשמעותו לרוב אינה ניתנת להבנה מילולית בלבד.
למשל, the tip of the iceberg מתאר חלק קטן מבעיה גדולה יותר.

לדוגמה, rule out יכול להפוך ל-exclude as a possibility.
כתבו דוגמה חדשה שמגיעה מהחיים שלכם או מנושא שמעניין אתכם.
חזרו לביטוי לאחר יום ולא רק מיד לאחר שלמדתם אותו.
נסו לשלוף אותו בלי לראות את התשובה.
שלבו ביטויים דומים בתרגיל השוואה.
בדקו למשל את ההבדל בין put off לבין call off.

דוברי אנגלית משתמשים בצירופים כמו find out, work out ו-turn down באופן שוטף.

Module G.
הוא מאפשר לבדוק שאלונים, פתרונות ומבנה בחינות ממועדים שונים במקום להסתמך על תיאורים לא רשמיים.
המקור חשוב במיוחד כדי להבחין בין חומר תרגול שנבנה עבור תלמידים לבין דרישה רשמית של הבחינה.
לכן גם במדריך הזה 400 השאלות מוצגות כמאגר תרגול ולא כרשימת חובה מטעם משרד החינוך.

Cambridge English – Idiomatic Language, C1–C2:
Cambridge English

British Council LearnEnglish – Word order in phrasal verbs, C1:

Council of Europe – CEFR Companion Volume:

Oxford University Press – Oxford Learner’s Pocket Phrasal Verbs and Idioms:
Oxford University Press

Up in the air
