Vocabulary in Context
נניח שאתם קוראים: “The new policy was initially controversial, but opposition gradually subsided as residents began to see its benefits.”
מילים כמו however, therefore, although, in contrast, as a result, for example ו־in other words פועלות כמו שלטי דרך.
קידומות כמו un-, re-, mis-, over- ו־under-, וסיומות כמו -tion, -ment, -able, -less ו־-ive, נותנות מידע.
ביטויים כמו which means, that is, in other words, מקפים, סוגריים או פסיקים יכולים להציג פירוש. אם כתוב “The species is nocturnal, meaning that it is mainly active at night”, אין צורך להכיר מראש את nocturnal. ההסבר נמצא במשפט.
2. ניגוד
מילים כמו but, however, although, unlike, whereas ו־rather than מספרות שהצד השני של המשפט הולך בכיוון שונה. אם כתוב “Unlike his outspoken brother, Daniel is rather reserved”, והמילה outspoken מוכרת, אפשר להבין ש־reserved מתאר אדם פחות פתוח או פחות דברן.
3. סיבה ותוצאה
כאשר מופיעים because, therefore, consequently, so או as a result, אפשר להשתמש בתוצאה כדי להבין את הסיבה ולהפך. אם חומר מסוים deteriorated ולכן כבר לא היה בטוח לשימוש, אפשר להסיק שהחומר נפגע, הידרדר או איבד מאיכותו.
4. דוגמה
אחרי מילים כמו for instance, such as ו־including עשויה להופיע רשימה שמגדירה למעשה את המושג. אם המשפט מזכיר “renewable resources such as sunlight, wind and moving water”, הדוגמאות מלמדות מהו התחום של renewable גם אם אינכם יודעים את התרגום המדויק.
המשפט “The committee addressed the concerns raised by residents” אינו אומר שהוועדה “נתנה כתובת” לחששות.
במקום לרשום address = להתייחס, רשמו address a problem, address a concern, address an issue.
400 שאלות Vocabulary in Context לתרגול שאלון G

381–400: 381-A, 382-A, 383-A, 384-A, 385-A, 386-A, 387-A, 388-A, 389-A, 390-A, 391-A, 392-A, 393-A, 394-A, 395-A, 396-A, 397-A, 398-A, 399-A, 400-A.
הוא מסוגל לומר “the thing you use for…”
לפעמים הקושי הוא ב־reference words כמו it, this ו־they.
