People use technology. Technology is helpful. It also creates problems. People depend on it.

הם יודעים ש-who קשור לאנשים, which לדברים ו-where למקומות. הם אולי גם שמעו על It is… that….

I think…, People should…, There are many…

My teacher gave me useful advice. She has taught English for twenty years. עכשיו נסו: My teacher, who has taught English for twenty years, gave me useful advice. אחר כך אמרו את המשפט בקול. המטרה היא לא רק לראות אותו – אלא להתרגל להרגיש כיצד המבנה נשמע.

Relative Clauses: לא רק who, which ו-that, אלא דרך לארגן מידע

Relative clause הוא חלק במשפט שנותן מידע על שם עצם. ההבדל בין שימוש בסיסי לשימוש בשליטה אינו נמדד רק בשאלה אם בחרנו who או which. תלמיד צריך להבין מה המידע העיקרי ומה המידע שמצטרף אליו. המשפט The student who sits near the window won the competition אינו מספר על כל תלמיד; ה-relative clause מזהה באיזה תלמיד מדובר.

זהו הרעיון של defining relative clause: המידע נדרש כדי לזהות את האדם או הדבר. לעומת זאת, ב-My brother, who lives in London, is visiting us, המידע על מקום המגורים מוסיף פרטים, אך “my brother” כבר מזוהה. לכן מדובר ב-non-defining relative clause, והפסיקים אינם קישוט – הם מייצגים הבדל במשמעות.

לפי ההסבר של British Council בנושא relative clauses, ב-non-defining clauses המידע נוסף ואינו נחוץ כדי לזהות על מי או על מה מדברים. במבנים כאלה משתמשים בין היתר ב-who, which, whose, when ו-where, אך לא ב-that, והפסיקים מפרידים את המידע הנוסף משאר המשפט.

טעות נפוצה של תלמידים דוברי עברית היא מבנה כפול: The girl who she won the prize…. בעברית אפשר לחשוב על “הילדה שהיא זכתה”, אבל באנגלית who כבר ממלא את תפקיד הנושא ולכן אין צורך ב-she. באופן דומה, The book which I bought it שגוי משום ש-which ממלא את תפקיד המושא ואין צורך ב-it.

בעיה אחרת נמצאת דווקא אצל תלמידים חזקים. הם רוצים להראות רמה גבוהה ולכן מכניסים relative clause כמעט לכל משפט. התוצאה היא משפטים ארוכים, עמוסים ומסוכנים. המטרה איננה “להכניס grammar”, אלא להשתמש במבנה כאשר הוא עוזר לקורא. לדוגמה, Social media, which has become part of everyday life, can help people stay in contact

Relative Clauses

מה רוצים לתאר? אפשרות נפוצה דוגמה
אדם who / that The teacher who helped me was patient.
דבר או רעיון which / that The course that I joined was useful.
שייכות whose Students whose confidence is low need practice.
מקום where This is the school where I studied.
זמן when I remember the day when I first spoke English confidently.
מידע נוסף who / which / whose / where / when + commas London, which attracts millions of visitors, is highly international.

Cleft Sentences: איך מלמדים את הקורא מה חשוב במשפט

ל-cleft sentences יש תפקיד שונה. במקום להוסיף מידע לשם עצם, הם משנים את מוקד המשפט. קחו משפט פשוט: Regular practice improves confidence. אם רוצים להדגיש דווקא את התרגול הקבוע, אפשר לכתוב: It is regular practice that improves confidence. העובדה לא השתנתה, אבל הקורא מקבל איתות ברור לגבי החלק החשוב.

זה משמעותי בכתיבה טיעונית משום שלפעמים תלמיד יודע מה הוא חושב אך אינו יודע כיצד להבליט את הנימוק המרכזי. כל המשפטים מקבלים אותו משקל. Cleft sentence יכול להכניס היררכיה: What many students need is not another list of rules but more opportunities to use English. כאן המוקד הוא ההבחנה בין שינון לבין שימוש.

לפי Cambridge Grammar בנושא cleft sentences, מבנים אלה מחלקים מסר לשני חלקים וכך מאפשרים למקד את תשומת הלב במידע מסוים. אחת הצורות הנפוצות היא it-cleft, לדוגמה It was Nina’s car that…, ויש גם מבנים המבוססים על what.

הטעות הנפוצה היא להפוך cleft sentence לנוסחה שמדביקים לכל פסקה. תלמיד לומד It is… that… ומתחיל לכתוב אותו ללא צורך. אלא שהדגשה עובדת רק כאשר יש משהו שראוי להדגיש. אם כל משפט “מודגש”, שום דבר כבר אינו באמת מודגש.

טעות נוספת היא בלבול בזמנים. אם הפעולה התרחשה בעבר ורוצים להדגיש אדם מן העבר, בדרך כלל נבחר It was…: It was my English teacher who encouraged me to keep trying. אם מדובר בטענה כללית בהווה: It is confidence that allows learners to speak more freely. לכן חשוב ללמוד את המבנה דרך משמעות ולא דרך מילוי רווחים בלבד.

בשיעור אנגלית אונליין אחד על אחד אפשר לעשות תרגיל שקשה לבצע בקבוצה גדולה: התלמיד אומר משפט רגיל, והמורה משנה בכל פעם את המוקד. Daniel bought the laptop yesterday. אפשר להדגיש את Daniel, את laptop או את yesterday. התלמיד שומע כיצד שינוי קטן במבנה משנה את כוונת הדובר. כך grammar מתחבר לדיבור, לאינטונציה ולכתיבה.

שלושה סוגי Cleft Sentences שכדאי להכיר

It-cleft: It was my teacher who helped me understand the problem.

Wh-cleft / pseudo-cleft: What I need is more speaking practice.

Reverse pseudo-cleft: More speaking practice is what I need.

Students use phones. Phones can help them find information. Phones can also distract them. גרסה מפותחת יותר תהיה: Smartphones, which give students immediate access to information, can be useful learning tools, although they may also cause distraction. לא נדרש כאן אוצר מילים נדיר. השיפור מגיע בעיקר מארגון.

אפשר גם להשתמש ב-cleft sentence כדי לפתוח טיעון: What schools need is a clear policy that allows useful technology without turning every lesson into screen time. במשפט אחד שילבנו pseudo-cleft וגם relative clause. זה לא הופך אותו אוטומטית למשפט טוב; הוא טוב משום שהמבנים מתאימים למשמעות.

לתלמיד שמתקשה באנגלית עדיף לא לנסות מיד משפטים כאלה בזמן מבחן. קודם בונים אותם בסביבה רגועה. מתחילים מ-Schools need a clear policy. אחר כך: Schools need a clear policy that limits unnecessary phone use. ורק כאשר זה יציב אפשר לנסות: What schools need is a clear policy that limits unnecessary phone use.

עצרו ובנו חמישה זוגות כגון the city where I live לעומת the city which attracts tourists.

  48. Write three sentences on the same topic: one simple, one with a relative clause and one with a cleft sentence.
  49. Write a short opinion paragraph and underline the sentence structure you consider most effective.
  50. Write 70–80 words about an issue relevant to teenagers and use at least two relative clauses and one cleft sentence naturally.

ליד כל טעות כתבו קטגוריה: extra pronoun, wrong comma, who/which, where/which, wrong tense in cleft.

אם היום למדתם What I need is…, מחר אל תפתרו רק תרגיל זהה.

כאשר קוראים טקסט באנגלית, אפשר לבחור פסקה ולסמן who, which, whose, where ו-when.

An employee who communicates with international clients needs clear English. עכשיו המילה מחוברת להקשר, לפועל ולמבנה תחבירי.

בדיבור, cleft sentences יכולים לעזור לאנשים שמרגישים שהם “יודעים אנגלית אבל לא נשמעים ברורים”. לפעמים הבעיה אינה חוסר במילים אלא חוסר במיקוד. משפט כמו What I’m trying to say is…

I worked on a project. The project involved international clients. זה מובן. אבל אפשר גם לומר: I worked on a project that involved several international clients. כאן לא ניסינו להישמע מתוחכמים; פשוט ארגנו את המידע בצורה יעילה יותר.

במצגת מקצועית אפשר להשתמש ב-cleft sentence כדי לסמן מסר: What our customers value most is quick support.

התחילו ב-who, which ו-that במבנים שאתם שולטים בהם. לאחר מכן הוסיפו whose, where, when ו-non-defining clauses.

ב-The students who finished the task may leave, ה-clause מגדיר אילו תלמידים רשאים לצאת. אם נסיר אותו, המשמעות תשתנה ל“התלמידים רשאים לצאת”.

לעומת זאת, ב-My mother, who works at a hospital, speaks English well, הביטוי my mother כבר מזהה את האדם. העובדה שהיא עובדת בבית חולים היא מידע נוסף ולכן מפרידים אותו בפסיקים.

הטעות הנפוצה היא לראות פסיק ולהחליט ממנו על המשמעות. עדיף לעשות את ההפך: להבין קודם את המשמעות ואז לבחור את הפיסוק. כך גם תזכרו שב-non-defining clause איננו משתמשים ב-that.

3. מתי אפשר להשמיט who, which או that?

ב-defining relative clause ניתן לעיתים להשמיט את ה-relative pronoun כאשר הוא משמש כמושא ולא כנושא. לדוגמה, The book that I bought יכול להפוך ל-The book I bought, משום ש-I הוא הנושא של bought וה-book הוא המושא.

לעומת זאת, ב-The student who helped me, אי אפשר פשוט למחוק את who, משום שהוא עצמו הנושא של helped. המשפט The student helped me…

What I need is more practice

What many schools need is a clearer policy on smartphone use

The city where I live פירושו למעשה “I live in the city”, ולכן where מתאים. לעומת זאת, The city which attracts tourists צריך subject ל-attracts, ולכן which מתאים.

אפשר לתרגל בזוגות: the school where I study מול the school which offers the programme; the hotel where we stayed מול the hotel which opened last year.

British Council – LearnEnglish: Relative Clauses.
British Council הוא גוף בינלאומי ותיק העוסק בהוראת אנגלית ובחינוך.
החומר שלו מסביר בצורה מסודרת את ההבדל בין defining ל-non-defining relative clauses ואת השימוש ב-who, which, whose, where ו-when.
המקור שימושי במיוחד להבנת הקשר בין פסיקים לבין משמעות, ולא רק לזכירת כלל טכני.

Cambridge Dictionary – English Grammar Today: Cleft Sentences.
Cambridge הוא מקור מרכזי ללומדי אנגלית, למורים ולכותבים המבקשים לבדוק שימושים דקדוקיים באנגלית מודרנית.
העמוד שנבחר מסביר כיצד cleft sentences מחלקים מסר ומאפשרים להדגיש מידע מסוים.
הוא מסייע להבין מדוע מבנים כמו It was… that… אינם רק שינוי צורני אלא כלי ליצירת focus.

משרד החינוך – המרחב הפדגוגי באנגלית, ארכיון בחינות הבגרות.
זהו מקור רשמי של מערכת החינוך בישראל ולכן הוא מתאים במיוחד כאשר מתייחסים ל-Module G ולבחינות 5 יחידות.
האתר מרכז בחינות, חומרי הכנה ופריטי מידע הקשורים למועדי הבגרות באנגלית, ובכלל זה Module G.
הוא מאפשר לתלמידים ולמורים לעבוד מול חומר רשמי במקום להסתמך רק על סיכומים לא רשמיים ברשת.
במדריך נעשה שימוש במקור לצורך ההקשר של Module G, בלי לטעון שקיים סעיף דקדוק קבוע על Relative Clauses או cleft sentences.

Council of Europe – CEFR Companion Volume.

People use technology. Technology is helpful. It also creates problems. People depend on it.

הם יודעים ש-who קשור לאנשים, which לדברים ו-where למקומות. הם אולי גם שמעו על It is… that….

I think…, People should…, There are many…

My teacher gave me useful advice. She has taught English for twenty years. עכשיו נסו: My teacher, who has taught English for twenty years, gave me useful advice. אחר כך אמרו את המשפט בקול. המטרה היא לא רק לראות אותו – אלא להתרגל להרגיש כיצד המבנה נשמע.

Relative Clauses: לא רק who, which ו-that, אלא דרך לארגן מידע

Relative clause הוא חלק במשפט שנותן מידע על שם עצם. ההבדל בין שימוש בסיסי לשימוש בשליטה אינו נמדד רק בשאלה אם בחרנו who או which. תלמיד צריך להבין מה המידע העיקרי ומה המידע שמצטרף אליו. המשפט The student who sits near the window won the competition אינו מספר על כל תלמיד; ה-relative clause מזהה באיזה תלמיד מדובר.

זהו הרעיון של defining relative clause: המידע נדרש כדי לזהות את האדם או הדבר. לעומת זאת, ב-My brother, who lives in London, is visiting us, המידע על מקום המגורים מוסיף פרטים, אך “my brother” כבר מזוהה. לכן מדובר ב-non-defining relative clause, והפסיקים אינם קישוט – הם מייצגים הבדל במשמעות.

לפי ההסבר של British Council בנושא relative clauses, ב-non-defining clauses המידע נוסף ואינו נחוץ כדי לזהות על מי או על מה מדברים. במבנים כאלה משתמשים בין היתר ב-who, which, whose, when ו-where, אך לא ב-that, והפסיקים מפרידים את המידע הנוסף משאר המשפט.

טעות נפוצה של תלמידים דוברי עברית היא מבנה כפול: The girl who she won the prize…. בעברית אפשר לחשוב על “הילדה שהיא זכתה”, אבל באנגלית who כבר ממלא את תפקיד הנושא ולכן אין צורך ב-she. באופן דומה, The book which I bought it שגוי משום ש-which ממלא את תפקיד המושא ואין צורך ב-it.

בעיה אחרת נמצאת דווקא אצל תלמידים חזקים. הם רוצים להראות רמה גבוהה ולכן מכניסים relative clause כמעט לכל משפט. התוצאה היא משפטים ארוכים, עמוסים ומסוכנים. המטרה איננה “להכניס grammar”, אלא להשתמש במבנה כאשר הוא עוזר לקורא. לדוגמה, Social media, which has become part of everyday life, can help people stay in contact

Relative Clauses

מה רוצים לתאר? אפשרות נפוצה דוגמה
אדם who / that The teacher who helped me was patient.
דבר או רעיון which / that The course that I joined was useful.
שייכות whose Students whose confidence is low need practice.
מקום where This is the school where I studied.
זמן when I remember the day when I first spoke English confidently.
מידע נוסף who / which / whose / where / when + commas London, which attracts millions of visitors, is highly international.

Cleft Sentences: איך מלמדים את הקורא מה חשוב במשפט

ל-cleft sentences יש תפקיד שונה. במקום להוסיף מידע לשם עצם, הם משנים את מוקד המשפט. קחו משפט פשוט: Regular practice improves confidence. אם רוצים להדגיש דווקא את התרגול הקבוע, אפשר לכתוב: It is regular practice that improves confidence. העובדה לא השתנתה, אבל הקורא מקבל איתות ברור לגבי החלק החשוב.

זה משמעותי בכתיבה טיעונית משום שלפעמים תלמיד יודע מה הוא חושב אך אינו יודע כיצד להבליט את הנימוק המרכזי. כל המשפטים מקבלים אותו משקל. Cleft sentence יכול להכניס היררכיה: What many students need is not another list of rules but more opportunities to use English. כאן המוקד הוא ההבחנה בין שינון לבין שימוש.

לפי Cambridge Grammar בנושא cleft sentences, מבנים אלה מחלקים מסר לשני חלקים וכך מאפשרים למקד את תשומת הלב במידע מסוים. אחת הצורות הנפוצות היא it-cleft, לדוגמה It was Nina’s car that…, ויש גם מבנים המבוססים על what.

הטעות הנפוצה היא להפוך cleft sentence לנוסחה שמדביקים לכל פסקה. תלמיד לומד It is… that… ומתחיל לכתוב אותו ללא צורך. אלא שהדגשה עובדת רק כאשר יש משהו שראוי להדגיש. אם כל משפט “מודגש”, שום דבר כבר אינו באמת מודגש.

טעות נוספת היא בלבול בזמנים. אם הפעולה התרחשה בעבר ורוצים להדגיש אדם מן העבר, בדרך כלל נבחר It was…: It was my English teacher who encouraged me to keep trying. אם מדובר בטענה כללית בהווה: It is confidence that allows learners to speak more freely. לכן חשוב ללמוד את המבנה דרך משמעות ולא דרך מילוי רווחים בלבד.

בשיעור אנגלית אונליין אחד על אחד אפשר לעשות תרגיל שקשה לבצע בקבוצה גדולה: התלמיד אומר משפט רגיל, והמורה משנה בכל פעם את המוקד. Daniel bought the laptop yesterday. אפשר להדגיש את Daniel, את laptop או את yesterday. התלמיד שומע כיצד שינוי קטן במבנה משנה את כוונת הדובר. כך grammar מתחבר לדיבור, לאינטונציה ולכתיבה.

שלושה סוגי Cleft Sentences שכדאי להכיר

It-cleft: It was my teacher who helped me understand the problem.

Wh-cleft / pseudo-cleft: What I need is more speaking practice.

Reverse pseudo-cleft: More speaking practice is what I need.

Students use phones. Phones can help them find information. Phones can also distract them. גרסה מפותחת יותר תהיה: Smartphones, which give students immediate access to information, can be useful learning tools, although they may also cause distraction. לא נדרש כאן אוצר מילים נדיר. השיפור מגיע בעיקר מארגון.

אפשר גם להשתמש ב-cleft sentence כדי לפתוח טיעון: What schools need is a clear policy that allows useful technology without turning every lesson into screen time. במשפט אחד שילבנו pseudo-cleft וגם relative clause. זה לא הופך אותו אוטומטית למשפט טוב; הוא טוב משום שהמבנים מתאימים למשמעות.

לתלמיד שמתקשה באנגלית עדיף לא לנסות מיד משפטים כאלה בזמן מבחן. קודם בונים אותם בסביבה רגועה. מתחילים מ-Schools need a clear policy. אחר כך: Schools need a clear policy that limits unnecessary phone use. ורק כאשר זה יציב אפשר לנסות: What schools need is a clear policy that limits unnecessary phone use.

עצרו ובנו חמישה זוגות כגון the city where I live לעומת the city which attracts tourists.

  48. Write three sentences on the same topic: one simple, one with a relative clause and one with a cleft sentence.
  49. Write a short opinion paragraph and underline the sentence structure you consider most effective.
  50. Write 70–80 words about an issue relevant to teenagers and use at least two relative clauses and one cleft sentence naturally.

ליד כל טעות כתבו קטגוריה: extra pronoun, wrong comma, who/which, where/which, wrong tense in cleft.

אם היום למדתם What I need is…, מחר אל תפתרו רק תרגיל זהה.

כאשר קוראים טקסט באנגלית, אפשר לבחור פסקה ולסמן who, which, whose, where ו-when.

An employee who communicates with international clients needs clear English. עכשיו המילה מחוברת להקשר, לפועל ולמבנה תחבירי.

בדיבור, cleft sentences יכולים לעזור לאנשים שמרגישים שהם “יודעים אנגלית אבל לא נשמעים ברורים”. לפעמים הבעיה אינה חוסר במילים אלא חוסר במיקוד. משפט כמו What I’m trying to say is…

I worked on a project. The project involved international clients. זה מובן. אבל אפשר גם לומר: I worked on a project that involved several international clients. כאן לא ניסינו להישמע מתוחכמים; פשוט ארגנו את המידע בצורה יעילה יותר.

במצגת מקצועית אפשר להשתמש ב-cleft sentence כדי לסמן מסר: What our customers value most is quick support.

התחילו ב-who, which ו-that במבנים שאתם שולטים בהם. לאחר מכן הוסיפו whose, where, when ו-non-defining clauses.

ב-The students who finished the task may leave, ה-clause מגדיר אילו תלמידים רשאים לצאת. אם נסיר אותו, המשמעות תשתנה ל“התלמידים רשאים לצאת”.

לעומת זאת, ב-My mother, who works at a hospital, speaks English well, הביטוי my mother כבר מזהה את האדם. העובדה שהיא עובדת בבית חולים היא מידע נוסף ולכן מפרידים אותו בפסיקים.

הטעות הנפוצה היא לראות פסיק ולהחליט ממנו על המשמעות. עדיף לעשות את ההפך: להבין קודם את המשמעות ואז לבחור את הפיסוק. כך גם תזכרו שב-non-defining clause איננו משתמשים ב-that.

3. מתי אפשר להשמיט who, which או that?

ב-defining relative clause ניתן לעיתים להשמיט את ה-relative pronoun כאשר הוא משמש כמושא ולא כנושא. לדוגמה, The book that I bought יכול להפוך ל-The book I bought, משום ש-I הוא הנושא של bought וה-book הוא המושא.

לעומת זאת, ב-The student who helped me, אי אפשר פשוט למחוק את who, משום שהוא עצמו הנושא של helped. המשפט The student helped me…

What I need is more practice

What many schools need is a clearer policy on smartphone use

The city where I live פירושו למעשה “I live in the city”, ולכן where מתאים. לעומת זאת, The city which attracts tourists צריך subject ל-attracts, ולכן which מתאים.

אפשר לתרגל בזוגות: the school where I study מול the school which offers the programme; the hotel where we stayed מול the hotel which opened last year.

British Council – LearnEnglish: Relative Clauses.
British Council הוא גוף בינלאומי ותיק העוסק בהוראת אנגלית ובחינוך.
החומר שלו מסביר בצורה מסודרת את ההבדל בין defining ל-non-defining relative clauses ואת השימוש ב-who, which, whose, where ו-when.
המקור שימושי במיוחד להבנת הקשר בין פסיקים לבין משמעות, ולא רק לזכירת כלל טכני.

Cambridge Dictionary – English Grammar Today: Cleft Sentences.
Cambridge הוא מקור מרכזי ללומדי אנגלית, למורים ולכותבים המבקשים לבדוק שימושים דקדוקיים באנגלית מודרנית.
העמוד שנבחר מסביר כיצד cleft sentences מחלקים מסר ומאפשרים להדגיש מידע מסוים.
הוא מסייע להבין מדוע מבנים כמו It was… that… אינם רק שינוי צורני אלא כלי ליצירת focus.

משרד החינוך – המרחב הפדגוגי באנגלית, ארכיון בחינות הבגרות.
זהו מקור רשמי של מערכת החינוך בישראל ולכן הוא מתאים במיוחד כאשר מתייחסים ל-Module G ולבחינות 5 יחידות.
האתר מרכז בחינות, חומרי הכנה ופריטי מידע הקשורים למועדי הבגרות באנגלית, ובכלל זה Module G.
הוא מאפשר לתלמידים ולמורים לעבוד מול חומר רשמי במקום להסתמך רק על סיכומים לא רשמיים ברשת.
במדריך נעשה שימוש במקור לצורך ההקשר של Module G, בלי לטעון שקיים סעיף דקדוק קבוע על Relative Clauses או cleft sentences.

Council of Europe – CEFR Companion Volume.
