A New Way to Learn
After the company introduced flexible starting times, fewer employees arrived late.
הטקסט אומר some residents והתשובה אומרת most residents. הקטע אומר may help והתשובה הופכת אותו ל־will solve.
The project cost less than planners had expected, The final cost was below the original estimate.
Maria used to drive to work every day. After a new train station opened near her home, her car remained in the garage most weekdays.
Not Supported.
| Not Supported |
שימו לב להבדלים בין some, many, most ו־all; בין could, may, is likely to ו־will; ובין often ל־always.
גם מילים כמו however, although, despite, yet ו־while חשובות במיוחד.
כותרת כמו The Price of Convenience מעניינת משום שהיא אינה אומרת רק “Convenience”.
Are Robots Ready to Teach? תשובה שאומרת “The writer believes robots are ready to replace teachers” אינה נתמכת רק משום שהמילים robots ו־teach מופיעות בכותרת.
A Small Change, A Big Difference
בשלב הראשון קוראים את השאלה ומזהים את מילת הפעולה: infer, suggest, probably, most likely, can be understood.
לעומת זאת, the longer hours made evening shopping possible for more customers מתאימה יותר לראיות.
הרגל חשוב הוא ללמוד לומר: “I cannot prove this from the passage.”
1: The Quiet Library
Passage: A city library used to be busiest in the afternoons. Last year it opened a small study room that remains available until 10 p.m. Within three months, evening visits increased sharply. Many of the new visitors were university students who said they needed a quiet place after work. The library has not changed its daytime opening hours, and staff say afternoon attendance has remained about the same.
- What is explicitly stated about evening visits? They increased sharply.
- What can be inferred about some university students? They study after working hours.
- Is “daytime attendance fell” stated, implied or unsupported? Unsupported; afternoon attendance stayed similar.
- Which title fits best? תשובה: “A Library Finds a New Evening Audience.”
- Why was the study room useful to many new visitors? It provided a quiet place when they were free.
- Is it stated that all new visitors were students? תשובה: No.
- What detail best supports the idea that the room met an unmet need? Evening visits rose within three months.
- Can we conclude that students disliked studying at home? No; that is not supported.
- What does “after work” imply about the visitors’ schedules? Many had daytime work commitments.
- Did the library extend all its opening hours? תשובה: No.
- Which is stronger than the evidence: “many students came” or “every local student came”? תשובה: “Every local student came.”
- What remained stable? Afternoon attendance.
- Is the success of the evening room a fact or an inference? The rise in attendance is fact; calling it successful is a reasonable inference.
- Can we infer that the library attracted a different time-based audience? Yes.
- Which word signals that the change happened quickly? תשובה: “Within three months.”
- Would “The End of Afternoon Libraries” be an accurate title? תשובה: No.
- What is NOT stated: room size, closing time, visitor group, attendance trend? Exact room size.
- Does the passage prove that the new room caused every evening visit? No; that is too absolute.
- What relationship is suggested between the room and evening attendance? The room likely contributed to the increase.
- Complete: The title should focus on ___ rather than a decline in daytime use. תשובה: new evening use.
2: Phones Face Down
Passage: A secondary school asked students to place their phones face down on their desks during short group discussions. Teachers did not collect the devices, and students could use them again after each activity. After six weeks, teachers reported that fewer conversations were interrupted. Students were divided: some appreciated the rule, while others said simply having the phone nearby was distracting.
- What did the school ask students to do? Place phones face down during discussions.
- Were phones banned for the whole school day? תשובה: No.
- What improvement did teachers report? Fewer interrupted conversations.
- Can we infer that the rule completely removed distraction? תשובה: No.
- Which title is most accurate? תשובה: “A Small Phone Rule Changes Classroom Discussion.”
- What does “students were divided” mean? They had different opinions.
- Is it stated that some students liked the rule? Yes.
- What is implied by complaints about phones being nearby? Visibility or proximity itself could distract some students.
- Can we say phones caused all classroom problems? תשובה: No.
- Which detail limits the strength of a positive conclusion? Some students still found phones distracting.
- Was the policy based on confiscation? תשובה: No.
- What changed after six weeks? Teachers observed fewer interruptions.
- Is “students concentrated better in every lesson” supported? תשובה: No.
- Which word signals contrast? תשובה: “While.”
- What can be inferred about the policy? It was limited rather than a total phone ban.
- Would “Students Demand a Total Phone Ban” fit? תשובה: No.
- What information is missing? Objective test-score data.
- Does teacher observation equal proof of higher grades? תשובה: No.
- What is stated about phone use after the activity? Students could use phones again.
- What is the safest overall conclusion? The simple rule reduced some discussion interruptions.
3: One More Tree, Several Degrees Less
Passage: Residents of one neighborhood complained that a small public square became extremely hot in summer. The city planted twelve young trees and added two shaded benches. Two summers later, measurements taken near the benches showed lower afternoon temperatures than measurements taken in an unshaded part of the square. The city is now considering similar projects elsewhere, although officials say the results from one square are not enough to predict exactly what will happen in every neighborhood.
- Why did the city make changes? Residents complained about summer heat.
- What was measured? Afternoon temperatures.
- Were temperatures lower everywhere in the city? תשובה: No.
- What can be inferred about shade? It probably contributed to cooler measured areas.
- Which title best fits? תשובה: “Testing Shade in a Hot City Square.”
- What does “although” introduce? A limitation or caution.
- Is the city certain the project will work identically elsewhere? תשובה: No.
- What fact supports expanding the idea? Lower temperatures near the shaded benches.
- What prevents a stronger conclusion? Results came from only one square.
- Can we conclude that trees alone caused the difference? Not with certainty; benches/shade and location also matter.
- Was the project started because of winter weather? תשובה: No.
- What does “considering” imply? No final decision has been made.
- Would “Twelve Trees Solve Urban Heat” be too strong? Yes.
- What is stated about the timing of measurements? They were taken two summers later.
- What is implied about city officials? They are interested but cautious.
- Which phrase provides that caution? תשובה: “Not enough to predict exactly.”
- Is resident satisfaction measured? תשובה: No.
- Can we infer the project produced encouraging evidence? Yes.
- What kind of evidence is used? Temperature measurements.
- Complete: The passage supports experimentation, not ___. תשובה: certainty.
4: The Meeting That Lost an Hour
Passage: A software company replaced a weekly 90-minute meeting with a 30-minute update. Employees were asked to send detailed reports in advance and use meeting time only for decisions that required discussion. Three months later, managers said projects were not moving more slowly, while employees reported having more uninterrupted time for focused work. The company has not yet decided whether other departments will adopt the same format.
- How long was the old meeting? 90 minutes.
- How long is the new update? 30 minutes.
- What do employees send beforehand? Detailed reports.
- What can be inferred about the purpose of the change? To reduce unnecessary meeting time.
- Did projects slow down according to managers? תשובה: No.
- What benefit did employees report? More uninterrupted work time.

The project will eliminate traffic ושאלו אילו מילים צריך לשנות כדי להפוך אותה לנתמכת: אולי may reduce some traffic.
Implied?
Stated.
Implied.
Most אינו All ו־May אינו Will.
Implied.
Stated vs Implied?
הפכו all ל־some ו־will ל־may ובדקו איך המשמעות משתנה.
Stated vs Implied?
מילים כמו may, tends to ו־in many cases מאפשרות כתיבה מדויקת יותר.

Bagrut Exams – English High School
English 2026 –

Mastering Context Clues

Reading and Use of English – Cambridge English
Cambridge English מציג הבנת משמעות משתמעת — “reading between the lines” — כחלק מהתפתחות מיומנויות הקריאה ברמות מתקדמות.
