Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life ו־Read an Academic Passage.
The wrong answer goes too far because…'.
לדוגמה, אם מופיע המשפט 'Evapotranspiration, the release of water vapor from soil and plants, can cool the surrounding air', אין צורך להכיר את המילה מראש.
מסיחים חוזרים על דפוסים: too broad, too narrow, reversed relationship, true but irrelevant, unsupported detail, extreme wording.
הוא מבקש מהתלמיד לומר באנגלית פשוטה: 'B is too broad', 'C reverses cause and effect', 'D is not mentioned'.
1: Urban Trees and the Physics of City Cooling
שימו לב במיוחד למילים שמסייגות טענה: may, can, often, under some conditions, partly, rather than.
תלמיד שמתקשה לדבר יכול להתחיל בהסברים קצרים מאוד: 'The evidence is in paragraph 4' או 'This answer is too broad'.
Paragraph 1. Urban trees are often described as natural air conditioners, but the comparison is only partly accurate. Trees cool cities through several mechanisms that operate at different times and scales. Their leaves block incoming solar radiation, reducing the amount of energy absorbed by pavement and walls. They also release water vapor through evapotranspiration, a process that can lower nearby air temperature when water is available. Because these mechanisms depend on tree size, species, soil moisture, wind and urban form, the cooling effect is highly variable rather than automatic.
Paragraph 2. Shade is usually the most immediate effect. A person standing beneath a broad canopy may feel cooler even when the measured air temperature changes only slightly, because the body receives less radiant heat from the sun and from hot surfaces. This distinction matters in public-health planning. A shaded bus stop can reduce heat exposure for pedestrians without producing a large change in a neighborhood weather station. Consequently, thermal comfort and air temperature should not be treated as identical measures of success.
Paragraph 3. Evapotranspiration works differently. Water absorbed by roots moves through the tree and eventually evaporates from leaf surfaces. The phase change from liquid water to vapor consumes energy, which can cool leaves and surrounding air. Yet this process is constrained during drought, when trees may close tiny leaf openings called stomata to conserve water. A species that cools efficiently in a well-watered park may therefore provide less evaporative cooling during an extreme dry spell.
Paragraph 4. The arrangement of buildings can strengthen or weaken the benefit of trees. In a narrow street canyon, a canopy may shade walls and pavement for hours, but dense foliage can also reduce wind movement. In some climates, lower wind speed may slow the removal of heat or pollutants. Planners therefore have to consider geometry, prevailing winds and the height of the canopy rather than simply maximizing the number of trees per block.
Paragraph 5. Time of day also changes the calculation. During the afternoon, shade can sharply reduce surface temperatures. At night, however, some dense canopies may slow the release of heat from the ground or limit long-wave radiation to the open sky. This does not mean that trees generally make nights hotter; rather, it shows that daytime and nighttime processes are not identical. A cooling strategy evaluated only at 3 p.m. may miss an important part of the daily heat cycle.
Paragraph 6. Tree health is another neglected variable. Young trees have small crowns and may take years to provide substantial shade. Mature trees deliver larger benefits but can be vulnerable to construction damage, compacted soil and restricted root zones. If a city plants thousands of saplings but fails to fund watering and maintenance, the projected canopy may never materialize. Survival rates therefore belong in climate planning just as much as planting targets do.
Paragraph 7. Species selection involves a similar trade-off. Large, fast-growing species may create shade quickly, but they can demand more water or outgrow narrow planting pits. Drought-tolerant species may survive harsh summers yet form smaller crowns. Diversity is also important because a street dominated by one species can be highly vulnerable to a single pest or disease. The most resilient planting plan often uses a portfolio of species matched to local soils, water availability and space.
Paragraph 8. Equity complicates the picture further. In many cities, neighborhoods with fewer trees also have more heat-absorbing surfaces and less access to private gardens. These patterns often reflect historical investment decisions rather than present-day preference. Planting programs that distribute trees equally by number can still reproduce inequality if some areas have much greater heat exposure. A needs-based approach may instead prioritize locations where vulnerable residents, high temperatures and limited shade overlap.
Paragraph 9. Measurement itself can create misleading conclusions. Satellite images are excellent for mapping surface temperature across an entire city, but they do not directly measure the air a pedestrian breathes. Fixed weather stations provide accurate air temperature at specific points, yet they may miss block-by-block variation. Mobile sensors carried on bicycles or vehicles can reveal fine-scale differences but are harder to standardize. Strong studies often combine several methods rather than treating one instrument as definitive.
Paragraph 10. Researchers also distinguish correlation from causation. A leafy neighborhood may be cooler partly because of trees, but it may also sit at a higher elevation, contain wider streets or have fewer dark roofs. If those factors are not considered, the estimated cooling effect of trees can be exaggerated. Natural experiments, before-and-after measurements and carefully matched comparison sites help reduce this problem, although no field design removes every source of uncertainty.
Paragraph 11. The interaction between trees and buildings can also affect energy use. Shade on windows and roofs may reduce summer cooling demand, especially when strategically placed on sun-exposed sides. In colder seasons, however, the same shade can reduce useful solar gain. Deciduous trees can partly balance this trade-off by providing summer leaves and losing them in winter. The best design depends on climate, building orientation and seasonal energy needs.
Paragraph 12. Water management can be integrated with tree planting. Depressed planting beds and permeable soils can capture stormwater that would otherwise enter drains, giving roots access to water while reducing runoff. This approach is sometimes called green infrastructure because one intervention performs several functions at once. Yet contaminated runoff, road salt or prolonged waterlogging can damage trees, so design details determine whether the system is mutually beneficial.
Paragraph 13. Some benefits are difficult to convert into a single temperature number. Trees can make walking routes more pleasant, reduce glare, provide habitat and alter how residents use public space. These effects may influence health indirectly by encouraging outdoor activity or reducing perceived stress. Because such outcomes depend on human behavior, they are harder to attribute solely to canopy cover. Still, excluding them entirely would undervalue why people care about urban trees.
Paragraph 14. Climate change makes long-term planning more demanding. A species suited to a city's historical climate may struggle under hotter summers several decades from now. At the same time, choosing only species from warmer regions can introduce ecological risks or poor performance in unusual cold events. Urban foresters increasingly use climate projections as one input among many, while preserving diversity so that not every tree responds to future stress in the same way.
Paragraph 15. The central lesson is therefore not that cities should plant fewer trees, but that planting is a design problem rather than a counting exercise. Effective programs link canopy goals to survival, water, shade where people actually walk, airflow, equity and long-term monitoring. Trees can be powerful components of heat adaptation, but their performance emerges from interactions among biology, climate and urban form. Asking better questions about those interactions is more useful than searching for one universal number for 'degrees of cooling.'

2: Sleep, Consolidation and the Stability of Memory
שימו לב במיוחד למילים שמסייגות טענה: may, can, often, under some conditions, partly, rather than.
תלמיד שמתקשה לדבר יכול להתחיל בהסברים קצרים מאוד: 'The evidence is in paragraph 4' או 'This answer is too broad'.
Paragraph 1. Memory is not stored in the brain in the same way that a file is stored on a computer. A new experience is initially represented by changing patterns of activity across networks of neurons. Some of these patterns are fragile: they can be disrupted, altered or simply forgotten. Over time, however, certain memories become more stable. Researchers use the term consolidation for the processes through which newly formed memories are transformed into more persistent representations.
Paragraph 2. Sleep has attracted attention because consolidation continues when a person is no longer actively practicing. Experiments often compare people who learn material and then sleep with people who remain awake for a similar interval. In many tasks, the sleep group later shows better retention. Yet sleep is not a magical storage period that improves every memory equally. The benefit depends on the kind of material, the stage of sleep, prior learning and what happens between learning and later testing.
Paragraph 3. One influential account focuses on communication between the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex. The hippocampus is important for rapidly encoding many new episodic memories, while cortical networks can represent knowledge across longer periods. During certain stages of non-rapid-eye-movement sleep, patterns associated with recent experience may be reactivated. This repeated activity is thought to help redistribute or strengthen aspects of the memory across broader networks.
Paragraph 4. Slow waves and sleep spindles are two physiological events often discussed in this context. Slow waves are large, coordinated fluctuations in neural activity, whereas spindles are brief bursts of oscillatory activity. Their timing may help organize when information is reactivated and when communication between brain regions is most effective. Researchers are especially interested in how these events align, because coordination may matter more than the simple presence of either event alone.
Paragraph 5. Rapid-eye-movement sleep, or REM sleep, has also been linked to learning, especially in research on emotion, creativity and associative processing. However, claims about a unique function for REM are difficult to prove because sleep stages interact across the night. Removing or disrupting one stage can change later sleep architecture. Consequently, a finding associated with REM does not automatically show that REM alone caused the effect.
Paragraph 6. Sleep deprivation provides another window into the problem. A person who stays awake all night may have difficulty concentrating during learning the next day. This means poor later memory can arise because information was encoded badly in the first place, not only because consolidation failed afterward. Well-designed studies therefore separate the effect of sleep before learning from the effect of sleep after learning.
Paragraph 7. The timing of sleep may also matter. A short nap soon after learning can protect some memories from interference by new information. Nighttime sleep provides more complete cycles of sleep stages and may support additional processing. Yet a nap and a full night are not interchangeable treatments. Their effects depend on duration, time of day, prior sleep pressure and the specific memory task being tested.
Paragraph 8. Researchers sometimes use targeted memory reactivation, or TMR, to test whether reactivation during sleep can be influenced experimentally. Participants learn material while it is paired with a sound or odor. During later sleep, the cue is presented quietly without waking the participant. In some studies, cued memories are remembered better than uncued memories, suggesting that reactivation can be biased. The method is promising, but effects vary and depend strongly on experimental design.
Paragraph 9. Not all memories should necessarily be strengthened. The brain constantly receives information of unequal importance, and selective forgetting can be useful. Some theories therefore propose that sleep helps reorganize memory rather than simply preserving every detail. It may strengthen central patterns, integrate new information with existing knowledge, or reduce access to irrelevant details. These possibilities are difficult to separate because different memory tests reward different forms of retention.
Paragraph 10. Emotion adds another complication. Emotional experiences are often remembered vividly, but vividness and accuracy are not the same. Sleep may preserve the emotional importance of an event while details change over time. Studies that ask participants how confident they feel can therefore produce a different picture from studies that test exact details. A complete account of sleep and emotional memory must distinguish subjective certainty from objective accuracy.
Paragraph 11. Age is also relevant. Sleep architecture changes across childhood, adulthood and older age, and so do the kinds of information people learn. Children generally have more slow-wave sleep than older adults, while aging is associated with changes in sleep continuity and physiology. These differences may contribute to age-related patterns in memory, but age also brings changes in health, attention and brain structure. Sleep is therefore one part of a larger system.
Paragraph 12. The laboratory itself imposes limits. Remembering word pairs on a computer is easier to measure than remembering a complex lecture, a social interaction or a semester of study. Laboratory control allows researchers to isolate variables, but it may simplify the kinds of learning that matter outside the experiment. Field studies can capture more realistic behavior, yet they introduce uncontrolled factors such as stress, caffeine, schedules and device use.
Paragraph 13. Individual differences further reduce the value of universal rules. Some people naturally sleep longer, some are more sensitive to sleep loss, and some maintain performance after a poor night better than others. Genetic factors, habits, health and expectations can all shape outcomes. Group averages remain useful for science, but they do not mean every person will show the same memory change after the same amount of sleep.
Paragraph 14. Practical advice should therefore remain modest. Consistent, sufficient sleep supports attention, learning and many aspects of health, but no precise sleep schedule can guarantee that a particular fact will be remembered. Studying effectively still matters: understanding, retrieval practice and spaced review provide strong learning signals for sleep to work with. Sleep is best viewed as part of a learning system rather than a substitute for learning.
Paragraph 15. The larger scientific lesson is about interaction. Memory after a night of sleep reflects what was encoded, which neural patterns were reactivated, how sleep stages were organized, what new information intervened and how memory was tested. Any simple slogan loses part of that chain. The value of sleep research lies not in proving that 'sleep saves memories,' but in explaining when, how and for which kinds of learning sleep changes the probability that information will remain accessible later.

3: Reconnecting Rivers, Floodplains and Modern Flood Risk
שימו לב במיוחד למילים שמסייגות טענה: may, can, often, under some conditions, partly, rather than.
תלמיד שמתקשה לדבר יכול להתחיל בהסברים קצרים מאוד: 'The evidence is in paragraph 4' או 'This answer is too broad'.
Paragraph 1. For much of the twentieth century, flood control often meant separating rivers from their floodplains. Levees, straightened channels and concrete embankments were built to move water quickly and protect settlements from frequent inundation. These structures can be effective, especially in densely developed areas. Yet they also change how water, sediment and nutrients move through a watershed. As flood risk increases in some regions, engineers and ecologists are re-examining whether giving rivers more space can complement conventional defenses.
Paragraph 2. A floodplain is the relatively flat land beside a river that can be covered by water during high flows. When a river is tightly confined, floodwater remains in a narrower cross-section and may move downstream rapidly. If water can spread across a broad floodplain, some of its energy is dissipated and part of the flood volume can be stored temporarily. This storage can lower or delay the peak flow, although the size of the effect depends on topography, soil and the magnitude of the flood.
Paragraph 3. The timing of a flood peak is as important as its height. Two tributaries that peak at the same moment can combine to produce a larger downstream flood. If restoration delays one tributary, the peaks may arrive at different times and reduce the combined maximum. However, timing effects are highly network-specific. A change that helps one town could shift water in a way that matters elsewhere, which is why watershed-scale modeling is important.
Paragraph 4. Vegetation contributes hydraulic roughness. Water moving through grasses, shrubs and floodplain forests encounters stems, roots and uneven ground, which can reduce velocity. This roughness may promote deposition of suspended sediment. Over time, however, deposited sediment can raise parts of the floodplain or alter channels. Restoration is therefore dynamic: the landscape that slows water in year one may not have exactly the same geometry decades later.
Paragraph 5. Sediment is not merely a nuisance. Many floodplains were built by repeated deposition over centuries, and fresh sediment can replenish soils. But excessive sediment can bury vegetation, fill side channels or carry attached contaminants. The desirable amount therefore varies by location. Engineers who focus only on water volume may miss ecological changes, while ecologists who focus only on habitat may overlook maintenance problems.
Paragraph 6. Floodplains can also process nutrients. During inundation, slower water may allow particles to settle, while microbes in wet soils can transform nitrogen compounds. These processes can improve water quality under some conditions. Yet floodplains are not limitless filters. If nutrient loads are extremely high or oxygen conditions change, stored nutrients can be released again. Claims that restoration will automatically 'clean the river' are therefore too simple.
Paragraph 7. Biodiversity is another motivation for reconnection. Periodic flooding creates a mosaic of wet and dry habitats that can support fish, amphibians, birds and invertebrates. Side channels and temporary ponds may provide nursery or feeding areas unavailable in a simplified channel. However, restoration does not guarantee the return of every historical species. Barriers elsewhere in the watershed, invasive species or altered temperature regimes can limit recovery.
Paragraph 8. Land use makes restoration politically difficult. A floodplain that appears empty may contain farms, roads, utilities or private property. Allowing more frequent inundation can impose costs on landowners even if downstream risk falls. Some projects purchase land, compensate owners or create agreements that permit seasonal flooding. The design question is therefore partly social: who bears the cost, who receives the benefit and who decides what level of flooding is acceptable?
Paragraph 9. Urban areas pose a special challenge because there may be little room to move levees or reconnect wide floodplains. Smaller interventions can still matter: riverside parks designed to flood safely, restored wetlands, lowered terraces or temporary storage basins can create space for water. These measures are unlikely to replace major defenses in every city, but they can add flexibility and reduce pressure on drainage systems during moderate events.
Paragraph 10. Design standards are complicated by climate change. A project built using only historical flood records assumes that the future resembles the past closely enough for those records to remain reliable. In many watersheds, precipitation intensity, snowmelt timing or storm sequences are changing. Designers increasingly test projects against multiple scenarios rather than a single 'design flood.' This does not remove uncertainty, but it reveals where a project is robust and where it is sensitive.
Paragraph 11. Monitoring is essential because restored rivers evolve. A project may initially lower a flood peak but later accumulate sediment, develop new vegetation or experience channel migration. Sensors, aerial surveys and repeated ecological sampling can reveal these changes. Monitoring is sometimes treated as an optional research expense, but without it managers cannot know whether the original assumptions remain valid or whether maintenance is needed.
Paragraph 12. Economic evaluation is similarly complex. A levee has a visible construction cost, while floodplain restoration may involve land purchases, habitat benefits, recreational value and avoided flood damages over decades. Some benefits are easy to monetize; others are not. Discount rates also affect how future benefits are valued today. As a result, two analyses using the same physical project can reach different economic conclusions because they make different assumptions about time and non-market benefits.
Paragraph 13. Risk communication matters because no measure eliminates flooding. Calling an area 'protected' can create a false sense of security if residents interpret a design standard as a guarantee. A levee can be overtopped, a wetland can fill, and a flood larger than expected can occur. Effective communication presents protection as a reduction in probability or consequence, while preserving emergency planning for events beyond the design range.
Paragraph 14. Successful projects often combine approaches. Hard infrastructure may protect critical neighborhoods, while upstream floodplains store water, wetlands provide habitat and zoning prevents new development in the most hazardous areas. The mix depends on geography and social priorities. Framing the debate as 'concrete versus nature' can therefore be misleading, because hybrid systems deliberately use both engineered and ecological functions.
Paragraph 15. The broader lesson is that river restoration is not a return to an untouched past. Modern watersheds contain cities, farms, dams, roads and climate pressures that did not exist in historical form. Restoration therefore means choosing which processes to recover, where to allow change and what risks society is willing to share. The strongest projects are explicit about those choices, test them with data and remain adaptable as the river responds.

אם למדתם robust בהקשר של נהרות, כתבו למשל 'A robust study needs more than one source of evidence.'
אפשר להשתמש בתבניות: 'Paragraph 6 says…', 'The author contrasts…', 'This answer adds an idea that is not in the text.'
Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Listening, Speaking
מבחן TOEFL אמיתי כולל כיום גם Complete the Words ו־Read in Daily Life, ולכן 400 השאלות אינן סימולציה של מבחן יחיד.
Reading.
TOEFL Reading.
גם משפטים קצרים כמו 'The author gives an example' מועילים.
Reading in a Second Language.
- ETS – TOEFL iBT Reading Section. Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life ו־Read an Academic Passage ומדגיש שכל המידע הנחוץ לתשובה נמצא בטקסט.
- ETS – Test Content and Structure.
- Council of Europe – CEFR Reading Comprehension.
- Cambridge University Press – Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. Reading in a Second Language
